Question about 1997 Dodge Caravan

Open Question

I have a 97 dodge caravan with a604 41TE transmission The trans was pulled to fix a leak. The torque converter was replaced as well as all seals and gaskets. The leak stopped but now the trans shifts from first gear to lock up in 2 or 3 seconds or in just a few feet It shifts so hard it chirps the tires it also has a lot of trans whine which it didn't have before This trans was rebuilt a couple of years ago and has always shifted great until this shop pulled the trans to fix the leak. Something changed when they pulled and put the trans back in I don't know if it might be the throttle pressure linkage or calibration of the torque converter or t.cm Any ideas or thoughts on this problem . Any thoughts wouuld be appreciatted. Gordon

SOURCE: transmission 97 intrepid

This is a simple sensor problem. I just had it and the sensor won't allow (to prevent engine damge) the vehicle to shift out of second gear. This is incorporated into the design to allow you to drive the vehicle to get repaired. The dealer will put it on a diagnostic checker, replace your sensor and off you go. Less than one hour.

SOURCE: trans light comes on and then it won't shift into low

Sounds like either the range sensor is not properly adjusted or the kick down cable is not adjusted right. If the cable is not adjusted right early failure of the trans will happen. So if you can have them scan the van and see if the range selector which tells what gear its in is right and make sure the drown shift cable is adjusted right because thats what controls your shift pattern and controls and pressure to the trans.I hope that this helps you.Have a great day..

Where can i go to get instructions on how to change a torque converter seal on a 1998 dodge caravan

If you are going to go to the trouble of pulling the transmission out to work on the torque converter, save yourself a lot of grief and just put a new torque converter in with a rebuilt transmission. When you go that far on a 12 year old vehicle, do it right.

Replaced front seal on my '97 Dodge Ram 1500, V6

Assembly of converter to trans and then tunit to engine? The torque converter must engage and slide into the front pump. The seal is easily damamaged if not properly fitted.Once the trans is against the engine the converter can be slid forward to bolt the flex plste. There should not be more than approx. 1/4 inch between the converter and trans bell housing if the converter is properly mated to the trans. Good Luck, Ned.

You are suppose to put the torque converter on the bell housing first, then align the engine to the torque converter slot. I hope nothing has been damaged.

Automatic fluid is leaking from the front of the small radiator

Your question is not complete but I assume u have a front seal leak on the transmission? this is the torque converter seal and it requires the removal of the trans to fix it/replace it, if the torque converter has a grove worn in the area where the seal rides you will also have to replace the torque converter. There are trans leak seal sweller chemicals out there, they will slow down or stop the leak for awhile, but in most cases this is a short term fix, also throughly clean the trans first (car wash works great) before any work and make double sure the leak is not from the trans pan gasket.
