I would start to look for another transmission or another vehicle as it sounds like the clutches are going out on the one in the car now

I have a 1997 lumina with 3.1L. the problem started with loss of power under load and p0300 code. check coils and vacuum leaks both OK.change spark plugs and wires.[same problem] check compression OK.

Since you changed the sensor we will assume it is working. When you disconnect it you put the computer in limp mode which stops it from using sensor values. If code 300 is the only code we will assume the coolant temp sensor and others are ok.
I would check fuel pressure with a gauge next.

2002 Ford Ranger transmission slipping?

The longer you drive with that condition, the more damage you will cause. Park it until you can repair it.

Think of it as how long would you think it is okay to run your engine without oil? Zero.

It was slipping heaps when we put foot down on accelorator but now it wont go anywhere just revs in first but wont go any where and the temp gauge went up to really hot

Your transmission is all done. After slipping this badly and getting hot, it might not be worth rebuilding. Try to find a different trans (or a different car. )

Acceleration - cannot get above 40 miles per hr.

If the engine revs up while in drive and running at 40mph, your transmission is probably slipping. Try checking your transmission fluid level. If it is OK, I would get it by a garage to have them look at it to cofirm.
