Question about 1999 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

Transmission is "gear hunting"

I have a 99 couger and after it gets hot never when it's cold its starts jumping in and out of gear and downshifting and upshifting constantly. On the obd2 scanner the only code it pulls is bank 1 of the catilyst system. Can the two be related? I', thinking its something electrical because it deoesnt do it all the time and like I said never when its cold. I dont want to just throw parts and money at it hoping to fix the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

when everything is cold the transmission fluid is thicker and so lubricates better, there are additives or thickeners that you can add which will probably help. go to parts store and tell them you have an old tranny that needs a little help and they will point you in the right direction.

Do you mean upshifting starts way early? Going from 2nd to 3rd in other words?

I have a 1995 mercury sable its an automatic. I need to know which D should i be driving in. The frist D or the Second D.

use the first D. this is overdrive. it gives you the best fuel economy. The second D downshifts the transmission into a lower gear. this would be used when climbing a steep hill (it keeps the transmission from hunting between gears) or descending an equally steep hill as it would help slow the car without using the brakes.

The transmission under hard acleration hesitates 99 dodge dieasel

It sounds to me that the clutch material in the transmission might be breaking down. Before too long I would have the transmission rebuilt or replaced. If you wait too much longer the transmission will start to slip and pretty soon you will have NO gears but first and reverse.
