Question about 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Oil smells like gas, 2004 VW Passat

I opened my oil fill cap and smelled the inside of the cap to see, if the oil had a normal order. The oil cap smelled more like gasoline, than the normal oil smell.

SOURCE: 1990 VW Cabriolet Gas Smell and humming from gas cap

I agree with the other solution. I have the exact car with the same problem. My mechanic replaced my fuel pump and it solved the problem.

SOURCE: oil smell inside car

We had this problem in ours, found out it is fairly common, my dad has same model and his did it too. In ours it was the camshaft seal. We had it replaced, it cost us about $650. Oil smell was gone after that.

I can smell gas in the cab of the windstar van but dont see any leeks but it built up presure when i opened the gas cap

The fuel smell is likely a leak in teh evaporative emissions collection system, or the fuel fill pipe or vent tube leaking. When you open the gas cap, it should relieve pressure, this is normal. Look under the rear for signs of wet spots of fuel leaking or broken or disconnected hoses that carry fuel vapors from the gas tank to the canister for storage, report back.

1998 VW Passat 4 cylinder keeps overheating I fill the resovoir with coolant and few short trips is empty again and overheating. No apparent leaks. Checked the oil levels-normal levels w/ no water. No...

Replace the theremostat first.Fill system and top off after the themostat opens..check for a leaking reservoir, Then fill the radiator,if it is low, with engine running. then, pressure check the cap with a tester,or just replace with a new one,it may be cheaper just to buy a new cap. Look at the fill neck of the radiator down where the cap seals, look for any uneven sealing surfaces cracks ect.
You can also load the car in gear Automatic transmission application a bit, about 1/3 throttle, with the cap off and look for bubbles comming out of the radiator.fill the radiator while making the test with a helper, friend. If you see a bubble now and then it may be a bad head gasket or a cracked head. You can remove the plugs, and check them for anti freeze, they will have a smell of sweet antifreez,if the engine got over heated enough!

Gas smell inside car and when refueling it constantly stops like the tank were full

beetles have what they call a "positive pressure"gas tank(the vent is in the cap)and it has a restriction in the filler to stop fuel leaking out if the car overturns. So if you try to put too much fuel in it will kickback and fill the recess in the fender.hence smell in car after refilling.......
(had 30 plus beetles in 3 years all great....when i worked for vw).

My 2003 VW passat shakes and smells like burning oil while idle, but the temp gauge is fine. It also feels like it has to jump out of first gear while accelerating from a stop. Any ideas?

Hello,

Check the backpressure in the engine ( remove the oil fill cap when engine is running ). You should feel only a light airflow in and out of the filler cap hole. If there is really pressure, your piston rings are worn out. Rebuild the engine.
Check the compression on each cylinder and the state of the spark plugs.

Oil smell in my vw

Sounds like valve cover gaskets need to be changed - they're a common failure on the 30v engine. Fortunately, they're also relatively inexpensive ($25 per cylinder bank - you need two - from www.ecstuning.com). They're also easy to change. They'd easily explain your oil smell - oil leaks onto hot valve covers and burns. Also, the misfire could be (not a guarantee, but it's possible) a result of valve cover gaskets as well - there's the main gasket which seals around the edge of the valve cover, and a second gasket shaped like three rings. This trims and seals the openings around each of the spark plugs, where the plugs are inserted through the valve covers. If you're leaking there, you can drown the top end of the plug in oil. If that gets into the spark wire boot, it can cause a misfire.
