Question about 2006 Chevrolet HHR

2 Answers

I have a 2006 chevy HHR with 17400 miles on it. It has a clicking noise in the front end when going over bumps. When lifting front of car, the axle feels loose on the transaxle side of shaft on both sides. Does this mean that the CV joints are bad? I Have 2006 HHR ,Hear a rubbing noise that changes with my speed sounds like driveshaft or scraping disc brakes , brakes are fine not sure about c-v joint how can I check, could it be a bearing in the transaxle case?

On my cobalt (same platform) there is a known bad engine mount that clunks (like you have bad shocks) when you go over bumps.
If you look under the car from the front, you can see its a circle, (supposed to be ) filled with a rubber/composite bushing. They crack and this causes the banging.
It is supposed to look like this...

However, the rubber breaks off and your engine is flopping around.
This part needs a press to press out the old piece, so a mechanic would be the best repairman for the job.

The scraping noise is a different problem. I would suggest CV joints, but being a 2006, they shouldnt be bad unless you tow, or accelerate heavily.
I would lean toward a bad wheel bearing with the symptoms you are describing - also a job that requires a press.
You're in for quite a bill!
Figure $250 each wheel bearing and another 100 or so to fix the mount.
Dealership would be 2x that.
Good Luck!!

It seems to be a bad wheel bearing or bad universal joint on tranaxle. Where CV joints and tie rods are located. Check all the above.Take to repair shop for a quote.

When going over bumps frontend makes noises

Several things can cause front end noise. Worn control arm bushings, worn or broken sway bar end links, and one of the most common can be worn struts.

Bad tires or bad cv axle or car just getting old and cars make noises as springs, shocks, struts age.

When going over bumps frontend makes noises worse during cold weather coud it be the struts

Could be anything, do some google searching on it. My prepurchase research indicated that the model line is notorious for needing a front end rebuild every 10,000 miles, everything not just the struts. It is front end heavy and this is increased in braking.

I bought a Hyundai instead and while I am not wholly satisfied with it I am glad that I did not buy the HHR. I carpool in a 2010 HHR, it has yet to hit 20,000 miles and its front end clatters like a car with a hundred thousand on it.

Front end rattle when going over bumps just changed the rotors and brakes noise still there.

At 36,000 miles I had to have my rack and pinions replaced. Problem fixed. At 84,000 miles I had the front tie rods replaced and new front tires. Still has the noise. Now I find out it is suspension and bushings. I still love the car though.
