Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

No power in truck

I just bought a 98 Jimmy and replaced the battery and can not get power anywhere in the truck. Its like the batter is still dead. I checked the fuse block under the hood and found nothing wrong. I have not checked the wire running to the starter, but would that keep the rest of the truck from getting power? I will check that tonight when I get home. Any help you can give would be great.

After charging my dead battery it will only run for a second or two then dies.

Perhaps the batter is "dead" dead and has met the end of it's functional life. You see, lead batteries like car batteries convert lead ions in solution into a solid as energy by chemical reaction. Charging the batter reverses the process, but the process becomes less and less reverseable as the age of the batter increases. When the process can no longer be efficiently reversed by "charging", the battery remains in it's dead, or semi-dead state, where it might run for only a few seconds.

Also, your alternator might be shot because technically, if you can start your engine, the alternator should provide the power to remain on; the battery serves only the purpose of starting the car and receiving the charge from the alternator to power the rest of the car's electronics.

Test both the battery and alternator, no more than $100-$150 to fix either problem.

Hope that helps!

Can I simply replace a battery in my jimmy car door unlock/lock

On the side of the key FOB is an indentation to put a coin. Pry apart with coin then replace battery. Long as the battery hasn't been dead to long it should still work on the vehicle.

Battery is dead and I want to charge it and take it in for replacement

Boost your car with jumper cables and let the car idle or drive around for about 20 minutes for the alternather charge the batter on its own .if the car shuts off after you started it might be your alternather is no good . the reason why ur alternather might not be working is because the batter all it does is give enough power for the starter to crank the engine as soon as the engine starts running it gets all its juice from the alternather and it charges the batter as well. but some times when the alternather works and the batter is dead meaning all the cells inside the batter are dead it will never take the charge from the alternather. so you would have to change the batter.

if you would like to know how you can you test both parts useing a volt-a-meter... just ask...

p.s. I think its ur batter if you never changed it. so get that changed for the winter so you wont have any more starting problems during cold wheaters
