Question about Fiat Punto

Open Question

Why does my MK1 punto (55s) overheat when stationary?

Hi, I'm having a bizzare little problem with my car, Firstly I'd like to add that it drives fantastically and has no strange noises, starts first time every time and has a full service every 6 months and the fluids topped up regularly. Problem is in heavy traffic when I'm stationary or only moving slowly for extended periods, the heaters start blowing cold air and the engine eventually overheats. When I'm moving there isnt a problem, Hot air works and engine temp stays normal. Please help.

SOURCE: No Hot Air

Check your coolant level. Service it if it is low. If it looks like it's at the proper level, check to make sure all air is bled out of the cooling system. There should be a bleeder fitting near the front of the engine, probably close to where the upper radiator hose connects. With the engine running, slowly open the bleeder to let air escape. When you see just coolant coming out, close it again. Do this every couple of minutes until no more air comes out.

sounds more like the thermostat may be failing. generally a water pump starts leaking out of the "weep" hole in the casting before it quits. just look at the front of the water pump for a greenish streak or an obvious leak.
if you also suspect you heater core may be getting plugged now would be a good time to back flush it to get rid of some of the gunk.

First when vehicle is cold like in the morning check and make sure that the vehicle has enough coolant/ antifreeze in radiator and reservoir. If coolant is need use a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. You will need some time to do this let car run at idle until the temp guage is in the middle NOT+ normal operating temperature. At this point if the thermostat should be in the open position. Let vehicle run and check to make sure that radiator fan comes on. This should come on when guage is about midway/half way. If temperature rises above half going to h/hot and fan doesn't come on, you either have a BAD FAN BAD FAN SWITCH BAD FAN RELAY OR BLOWN FAN SWITCH FUSE. You will need to check all of the following I will help if its needed. If fan comes on and doesn't go off and vehicle continues to get hot even with fan running. Feel radiator hoses and see if the lower radiator hose is cool/cold. If it is you have thermostat that stuck closed. Replace thermostat and fix problem. If all the above is good and vehicle continues to over heat. THE BAD NEW IS THAT YOU MAY HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET /CRACKED HEAD /BROKEN WATER JACKET. Basically you will need a HEAD JOB at least a head gasket. ONe tell tail sign of this is oil looking like milkshake/chocolate milk-a creamish while residue in oil or antifreeze. Contact if you need hel0p. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

I have a '96 mk1 cti, replaced the coil and module and the car still doesn't spark, the module gets warm when cranking so i also cleaned the ground wires, what else should i check?

Try your CRANK SHAFT SENSOR or CAM SHAFT SENSOR.

If there is no Reference ZERO signal, then the car will not spark or SPARK ONCE and then nothing.

Put a Timing Light on the Car and then turn it over, if you get a single light, then it is one of those 2 sensors (Probably the CRANKSHAFT)

Red check light is on what does it mean .fiat punto

If the red light looks like a little engine than you little Punto is sick and needs a doctor. You'r best bet is to go to a mechanic and ask him to diagnose why you'r Punto isn't well.
If the red light looks more like a little can with something dripping out of it. Than your Punto is just asking for some oil. Aafter you give it 2 litres of oil it should be happy again.

Cant locate the spark plugs on vw golf 88 mk1..any ideas?

I'm assuming you have a petrol fuelled car, as diesels do not have spark plugs.

Find the distributor cap leading off the distributor - it should look a little like this: http://www.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1920&bih=895&tbs=isch:1&aq=f&aqi=g8g-m1&oq=&q=distributor%20cap

there should be 5 leads trailing from the cap - the lead in the centre leads to the "coil", the other 4 leads go to the spark plugs. There should only be 4 as the Mk1 was only made as a 4 cylinder engine.

Pull off the leads (though not whilst the engine is running as you'll electrocute yourself) and the spark plugs will be revealed.

Have a 94 Punto 55s. Starts and runs well but occasionally doesn't accelerate properly as if it is running out of fuel despite having half a tank. Could it be a problem with injectors, pump? Or gunk in...

I hear never heard of redseal. I do know that Sea Foam at Wal-Mart is the best fuel additive for cleaning out injectors. It is under 10 dollars.

is that a typo
should it be 1996 FIAT PUNTO 55S

degrease the engine with off the shelf products

if leak is confirmed from the top of motor

redo rocker cover seal with silicon
see if that slows the leak
cam seals may not have been replaced when you thought they were

grating noise at belt could be idler bearing

oil leak onto exhaust and smoking
real engine seal . sump

I got a mk1 fiat punto sporting and its stuck in gear

if it is an automatic, it means your brake to shift sensor went bad, it is located under the shifter, you have to remove the panel around the shifter to access it.

If it is a manual transmission, then you have some kind of problem with your clutch.
