Been there. It could be several things but the way I find problems like this is to take a spray bottle of water and start spraying wires and connections until the engine dies. That will pretty well pin point where the problem is. I've found its usually a connection that isn't sealed up anymore. But also found a coil jumping spark when it got wet.

SOURCE: mass air flow sensor is

My check engine light came on and the code came back saying that the mass air flow sensor was out. All I did was change the air filter even though I really didn't think it needed it, the light went off and has not come back on yet. Knock on wood!

What would be wrong with your 88 olds cutlas ciera if you're driving down the road and car dies and won't restart?

My car did this for a while until it would no longer move and I was told all sorts of things including cleaning (all the gunk near the MAF -hosing) which made it run for a month but did idle too high. So diagnose and get the codes from your car- the paperclip way (autozone cant cause its older than 1992).
Codes I pulled pertaining to this issue were 22 (Throttle Position Sensor- TPS Signal Voltage Low) , 23 (Air Intake Temperature- MAT Low Temp Indicated), and 34 (Mass Air Flow Sensor- MAF)
Easy to DIY with these 3 sensors

CAR WON,T STAY RUNNING REPLACE IDLE CONTROL SENSOR,EGR,MAP SENSOR,STOP ALL AIR LEAKS.

Have you checked fuel pressure? Maybe the fuel pump or fuel filter is not providing enough pressure at the fuel rail for the injectors to work.
Also, clean the mass air flow sensor with a sensor- safe cleaner.
Good luck.

I have a 2000 excursion and sometimes wen I accelerate it starts chocking out at 2000 rpm and won't go any higher

Mostly your MAF MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR needs cleaning.
1st Disconnect the battery ground cable
then open the engine air cleaner.
  • Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector.
  • Release the air cleaner clamp.
  • Separate the inlet side from the outlet side of the air cleaner.
  • Remove the MAF assembly.
  • Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector.
  • Remove the nuts and separate the MAF sensor from the MAF sensor plate.
As shown

then follow the steps in the video.
HOW TO CLEAN A MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR

if that did not clear your engine chocking then make sure there is no Vacume leak.
hope that helps

I have a 2000 Chevy Impala and my car only stay crank if my foot is on the gas, when I release , it shuts off. It's not the mass air flow sensor or fuel pump what can it be??

Inspect, clean or replace the Idle Air control valve...about $35 for the part...also how is the air filter? A clogged catalytic converter can cause this too? ( A free check at quality muffler shops. Hope this helps.

My 2003 avalanche won't stay running..even when i'm driving and slow down for a stop sign it stalls. would appreciate some assistance. thanks

First take mass air flow sensor off and clean it with a non-chlronated brake cleaner and reinstall it and see if that helps. Then if that did'nt help check the fuel pressure because low fuel pressure will do this, make sure its within the specs which is 55-60 psi with key on and engine off. Also there are several sensors that will cause this to like crank sensor, throttle position sensor.

Replaced mass air flow sensor, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Truck would not go past 2500 RPM before I installed new maf sensor. Now it wont idle when stopped. Runs fine down the...

Make sure there are no vacuum leaks around the mass air flow sensor. If it won't idle when stopped, change the Idle Air Control Valve. Reset the ECU module by removing the negative battery terminal and leave it aside for ten minutes and then reconnect it.
