Question about 1990 Buick Century

1 Answer

1990 Buick Century WILL NOT start

Over the last few months we have been having trouble with this vehicle. We have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, all the spark plugs & wires, we have dropped the starter to have it checked and then rechecked it ourselves. The alternator is only about 1 year old and the car refuses to even turn over. The battery is fully charged. Can anyone help me with this?

If all lights work and everything on insterment panel lights up but won't click or anything when you turn key than i would chk. the ignition switch, it should be under dash on steering colume. there is a way to chk. this if you know what you are doing. i'll try to explane. need to turn ignition to on, then you have to cross the big post on starter to the small post on starter and it should start, if it starts than its ignition switch. now it will only start if you got regular lights lit up on dash, like you would usely have if it was to start with key. like i said don't atemp this unless you know what your doing. if by chance you have acsess to a remote starter switch that would be better and safer. then you could clamp the ends to the posts and have the starter button in your hand. hope this helps OLD SCHOOL.

Sounds like your fuel pump is weak so i would check the fuel pressure first. The fuel pressure should be 40-47 psi with key on and engine off and 31-44 psi with engine running. If its not within these specs then replace the fuel pump.

When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? you may have a fuel filter that is getting restricted or possible the fuel pump is going bad. You will need to check the fuel pump pressure, and see if you can blow through the fuel filter. Hope this helps.

1992 Buick Century Custom. Trouble starting as though not getting gas. Changed the fuel pump and filter and still has the problem. After a few trys it will start and run ok. ?????

Sounds like you need to replace the fuel pump relay which is about $13 at Autozone. It is simple to replace. It is under the hood on the passenger side right behind the headlights.

Check a few things, check your spark plugs, spark plug wires, also check your fuel filter, fuel pump, but the first thing that you should check is the ground wire from your battery to the engine block

It sounds like the engine computer. Also check the resistance in the injectors and o-rings. O2 sensor and coolant temp sensor could give you a problem.

I have a 1987 Buick Century. That stalls out

I'm not Roger but can tell you this....if you have a bad crankshaft position sensor or a corrupt ECM....your car will do that.....last things could be the timing belt.

'90 Buick Century dies often, will start again after sits 2 hrs

The fuel pump is starting to go. The fuel pump sending unit which is part of the fuel pump is over heating in time and shutting down. This is causing the fuel pump to shut down.
I would replace the fuel pump and filter.

Good luck

1998 Buick Century losses significant power at lower speeds

Possibly the EGR valve or TPS sensor if you have CEL codes. Check fuel pressure and if low change fuel filter if it is still low replace the fuel pump I beleive it is suppossed to be 41 to 47 psi. Pretty easy to replace fuel filter the Buick Century has a cover you remove in the trunk to access the fuel pump making the change very easy, if you can fit in the cramped space of the trunk.
