Question about 2005 Suzuki XL-7
The ticking noise has gotten louder in the past week or so.
Check serpentine belt for extreme wear or tear, also look at pully for obstruction. Could be slight valve tap or timing "belt or chain" slapping against the timing cover case, (whatever Suzuki uses).

It's very likely that the ticking noise is the sound of an electrical spark jumping somewhere it shouldn't. This will usually be accompanied by a hesitation or missfire. A notorious culprit on this engine is the spark plug wire boot that fits onto the plug. These should be inspected for cracks that would let the spark short to the valve cover rather than travelling to the plug as it should. If you find a questionable one, wrap some electrical tape around the boot and see if that fixes the problem. Of course this is not a permanent fix, and you should replace the wires as soon as you can.
