i know for a fact that the bearing comes with the hub., and if the old bearing is badly damage you may need to heat it to remove it from the axel...so this may be a rather big job if your not equipt
with torch or other ...

Grab the bed of the truck and vigorously rock the vehicle from side to side. If you hear clunking in the axle, you probably need to check the carrier bearings in the differential. I had the carrier bearings, wheel bearings, and seals replaced in my mother-in-law's 1991 Ranger for $280, and it rides like a new truck. Well, ok, it rides like an 18 year old truck with a new rear end. I provided the wheel bearings and seals to the shop, and they provided the carrier bearing, lube, and labor. While the axles are out, check the surface where the axles ride on the bearings. If they are worn, there are undersized bearing available, but it is usually cheaper and easier to just by new axles.

SOURCE: Left rear axle seal is leaking differental oil.

ok then here is the procedure  1 take off the axle nut
2 on the lower control arm you will find a large nut and bolt i belive the nut is a 21mm and the bolt side is an 18mm. this bolt is the one at the knuckle near the brakes. remove it
3 you will need to pull the knuckle out of the way or a helper to pull the knuckle out of the way so you can slip the axle out of the knuckle.( its a tight fit but there is room to slip it out.)
4 use a pry bar to pop the axle free of the diff. hosing its held in by a spring clip make sure the clip comes out with the axle if it gets stuck inside you will have to fish it out.
5 use a pry bar or screwdriver to pry seal out of housing then use a flat object that contacts the entire rim of the new seal so it can evenly be installed with out getting smashed and tap it in with a hammer. ( a good trick here is to use some grease and pack it into the new seal where the spring is this will prevent the spring from being shocked out of the seal during instalation . the spring keeps tension on the rubber in the seal so it stays tight to the shaft it is sealing.)
6 then revers the above steps. also make sure you are using the right gear lube it will most likely be 75w-140 but make sure you check your owners manual will tell you if it doesnt say on the diff cover. you can cause a lot of damage if you put in the wrong thing. and make sure  you feel the axle spring clip snap into place.
as a note there are two types of axle seals that are used on these so if the new seal looks different than the old seal then the folliowing will be important to you.the seals on these have been redesigned so if you axle has what looks like a cup or dust cover pressed onto the shaft where it goes into the diff the new style does not use this and it will prevent the axle form going in all the way so the spring clip will not lock in and you will have a leak. so you will have to remove it and install the axle without it.

Front end shakes


Ty, first off, do you feel the vibration in the steering wheel? Is it in the steering wheel & front end? I will assume that the tires were inspected and determined to be ok. Sometimes, the shop may have a rookie do the basic inspection and then have an experienced tech come in if there seems to be an issue. The problem with this is that the ford suspension needs to be "loaded" in order to properly inspect for loose components. That means that they would have to either jack the front suspension on an alignment rack from the control arms or use a jack stand under the control arm.. If the vibration is only in the front end and tires are good. It sounds like there may be an issue with a ball joint or control arm bushing. Something along those lines.. More info needed.

Kind of a rumbling noise coming from the rear


It sounds like you have a worn out bearing in the rear end, the vehicle should be put on a lift with wheels off the ground and inspect closer while in gear.

Vibration while decelerating(like going over rumble strips)at highway speed


This is a bad problem. when i tried to just ignore it my whole rear end fell out. make sure the huge bolt that keeps the whole rear end in tact is tight. bring it in to a mechanic for inspection unless you fully understand it and you can inspect for any loose bolts (mainly around the rear end area but also check the tranny connection to the engine.

My 2002 Ford Explorer 4WD has a significant humming noise/light vibration while driving and sounds like the rear differential bearings/gears. How can I tell/pinpoint the problem?


Usually, the rear pinion bearing will make a higher pitched whining noise under a slight load. As soon as the throttle pedal is released, the noise stops. The rear axle shaft bearings will make a lower growling rumble when they are bad.

Another thing to check are the Emergency brakeshoes inside the hub of the rear rotors. The shoe material frequently separates from the rusty shoe plates and the bonded material gets pulverized. This would be similar to a "rocks crushing" sound and can cause vibration in the drivetrain.

The U-joints can cause this problem too. Check for rust and oil streaks which appear shortly before the U-joints fall apart. You should find telltale streaks on the undercarriage of your vehicle.
The front driveshaft can cause noise without being powered. There is just enough sympathetic rotation when the 4 wheel drive is Off, to cause sounds and vibration.

Testing can be aided by using a Commercial hoist and having the drivetrain engaged with the engine running. You would observe the shaking or use a probe "long broom handle" to the stationary parts like the axle tubes, differential housing, pinion bearing area, and so on. This would require a helper to sit in the hoisted vehicle and a second person to stand under a running machine. Not for the faint of heart. No baggy or loose fitting clothes, no long hair, etc.

Now there is a specialized machine which can Electronically investigate noise and vibration. There are sensors which are placed under the vehicle and it listens to vibrations. I saw one machine one time. It helps in balancing driveshafts too. A driveshaft balancing shop may be able to fix you up.

I hope my solutions are very helpful to you. If you do not have the exotic testing equipment you may have to drop the driveshafts to check your U-joints.

Severe vibration and knocking sound!


sounds more like a ujoint or a center support for the drive shaft. also check and make sure that the flywheel bolts have not come loose. also check the harmonic balancer and make sure it is not seperating

2 wheel drive refers to the rear wheels.
The traction control feature applies the brakes to the wheels that are spinning due to lack of traction so that they can slow down and get a grip or traction, if its in 2 wheel drive the system will pulse the brakes and you will hear and feel the system engage usually a buzzing vibration and an indicator light will come on the dash to tell you its engaged
