Question about 1999 Ford Explorer
It makes this loud noise that sounds similar to an impact wrench. it always does it when im going down the hwy at 55 mph than when i let off the gas it does it. it will also do this when traveling at lower speeds if im going down a hill and take my foot off the gas. it does not do this if im going up a hill. my 4x4 also does not work and 4hi and 4lo lights just flash at me when i try to put it in. some people have told me this noise is my planetary gears in my ******, and others have told me its my transfer case. i am also only getting 15mpg!!! should be getting like 24 hwy!!

sounds like it's the motor is going bad or has a bad connection, try cleaning the connector if there isn't any gunk in the connector, check the manual see if there is a ohmn test you can run on the motor, if not i'd replace the motor.

automatic or manual transmission? if manual then the first gear fork is bent if automatic then there is trouble in the valve body which means that you have to have the transmission rebuilt
