    Hi jlan1978

With the indulgence of TLRogue, the oil light on, and the oil light on indicates one of 2 things.

    1. There is insufficient oil in the sump to lubricate the engine

    2. There low oil pressure in the engine caused by a failed engine bearing, or the oil pump itself.

The loose sound you hear will relate to the lack of lubrication to engine parts, or indeed a bearing failure that is causing the low oil pressure problem. In turn, the low oil pressure will create many and varied percussive sounds as the engine slowly eats itself! I suggest if the oil levels to the engine are OK, then you have it towed to a reputable repairer to investigate the cause of the oil pressure failure.

I also ask that you change the Inappropriate vote to JLRogues profile. It is generally reserved for completely ludicrous solutions that have nothing to do with the problem. In this case, it does not really apply. Thanks for using FixYa, I hope that you can get the problem sorted out easily.

    regards

Have you enough oil in it?

Thanks for rating me poorly, however i must point out you did not mention the oil level was ok in your question. In my line of work i get people putting petrol in their diesel, oil in their coolant and driving around with flat tyres without realising. Not saying you fall into this catagory but the simplest things are sometimes overlooked.

VW Golf 2007 1.9TDI, I was recently in a accident approx 20mph, and crashed head on into a turning car. What is making the kinda rattling/clicking noise, more noticeable during gear changes.

This could be almost anything from loose trim to broken body parts, you should get the car checked by bodyshop to make sure that it is safe to drive

There is a ticking noise from standard vw golf engine,

It would not hurt to check it but the loss of oil and the loss of coolant are worrying. I would have a compression test done to check the head gasket and head. The tick may be compression gas escaping at the gasket. That would also account for coolant loss. Have a pressure test done on the cooling system to check for leaks. Towing a trailer ( I guess that it had a bit in it) over a long distance at speed ( probably 60 mph or better) places strain on a good engine but if the engine is on par or below then faults appear

I have a ticking noise coming from engine it was low on oil but ive topped up oil and its still there it sounds bad what could i do? its a petrol engine vw golf mrk 4. thanks

If the oil level got too low, it may have caused serious internal damage.
If that is the case, the noise usually gets louder and/or faster, the faster you rev the motor. Only an experienced mechanic can determine for sure exactly what the extent of the damage is.

Hello there. I've recently bought a 54reg mk5 golf 2.0 gt fsi and the engine is making a tapping noise - even when it's been running. Is this normal?

a light tapping noise is quiet normal .Use a flushing oil before you change the oil and filter.then use 10/40 semi synthetic(as recc by VW)when engines at operating temp run at 3500 fo 30 secs, this will "charge" the hydraulic tappets,a cold engine has a valve rattle for about 15/20 secs but if longer then cam followers faulty.normally at 120,000m(roughly)
please leave feedback..

VW Golf engine rattle

You are experiencing detonation. Main causes are:

  • Low octane fuel - Use higher octane rating fuel.
  • Incorrect ignition timing - Readjust timing
  • Too high compression ratio(due to engine mods such as skimmed head or high compression pistons) - replace modified parts
  • Air/fuel mix too lean - Replace fuel filter and readjust.

Vw Golf 98 clicking sound from engine when starting

If it just clicks when you are trying to start, the battery is low, near dead and needs recharge or replace.
If it starts and strange clicking continues, it is a sign of hydraulic valve lifters not functioning properly --which can be caused by low oil pressure (because of low oil level or bad oil pump). If the battery is good and drains dead after a while --something is connected that should not be. Even your dome light can do that --or the headlights on --or the parking lights on. Check the oil level, if low, add oil and check again.

Gauges say no pressure in engine 1995 vw golf

There are two pressure switches. One for oil pressure and one for a dirty oil filter. Are you sure you've changed the right switch. If car drives for 30 mls it doesn't sound like you need an engine. The spluttering is likely to be completely unrelated to the oil warning I suspect.

Cheers John
