Flat,battery, new one installed now turns over but wont fire up ?
Battery went flat on my saab 9000 annervesary,replaced it and now engine turns over but wont start, with a ahint of smoke from the other side of the engine,,,really dont want to keep flattening the engine any ideas

Hi,Ive had problems with the VSS (vehicle security unit) on the 9000 its possible you have upset the pairing of the immobiliser and the key fob I would try pairing them together again as per manual and give it a go then.

There are a LOT of things that can cause an engine to not start. The fuel pump is only one of many in a long list. Also, hearing the pump motor running does not mean it is delivering the correct amount of fuel pressure to make the engine run.
Proper diagnostic testing needs to be done to determine which SYSTEM is causing the problem (Ignition? Fuel? Engine mechanical problems/ low compression?)
Either the timing belt/chain/gears has failed, which can really change the sound of cranking, but the engine visibly goes around.
If the engine does not turn (as it sounds is the case with your car), but the starter spins fast enough to be described as sounding like a hairdryer, then the starter drive is bad and the starter will need to be replaced or rebuilt.
The starter drive is turned by the starter motor, and the drive in turn turns the gear that engages the flywheel of the engine. The part that turns that gear will not let the starter motor be pushed by the engine — it has a one-way, overrunning clutch in it. If the engine got a chance to spin the starter, the starer would simply explode. It is maybe 10 or 15 to one between the engine. One good start using the gas pedal would spin the starter like 15 to 25 thousand RPM...
If that overrunning clutch fails the starter motor cannot spin the gear that turns the engine.
You dont. Alternators DO NOT require polarisation as they can only be fitted to vehicles that are wired as NEGATIVE EARTH. If you have replaced the Alt, reconnect the wiring, reconnect the battery - Positive lead first then the negative lead, then start the motor !!
Using multimeter, check the charge rate at the battery. It should be around 13.8 volts. The charge rate SHOULD NOT go above 14.7 volts and if it does, turn the motor off immediately and recheck the connections, especially any battery voltage sensing wires. if nothing appears to be wrong, contact an auto electrician and have them check things out. I have known faulty regulators, even in new Alternators..
The commmon thing is GROUND.
Probably the ground strap from the engine to the chassis is worn, broken, loose, corroded, or otherwise not making good ground.
Check the negative cable on the battery to see if the "pigtail" is disconnected.
Replace or install a ground strap from the engine to the chassis.
Do that first; otherwise, on the positive side, the inline 100Amp FuseLink may be blown.
