no sorry i should have put that in the post,it's on the standard 14" steel wheels, i'm assuming that it's electronic, i'm pretty sure that these speedos are electronicaly operated so i'm presuming that the fault lays their......somewhere.

    ideas?

  • sdaudi Jan 24, 2009

yep, it's been jumped recently, by speedo head do you mean the speedo gauge in the dash cluster?, or the sensor on the transmission?, i should probably add that this a automatic model.

    many thanks

  • sdaudi Jan 24, 2009

sounds good, i'll go out and get one, to my knowledge, and the fact that the speedo was reading correctly before, i'm assuming that all this stems, as you suggested, from the car being jumped, does that sound right?

so any speedo off any automatic B3 (86-91) audi 80 (will the 90 work) regardless of engine size?

Thanks again for all your help.

Is the vehicle fitted with oversized wheels? if so, try recommended tyre and wheel sizes.

Ok, has the car been jump started due to a flat battery? The sudden surge from this was popping the speedo heads. Trying to think back, im sure the passat suffered the same.

Looks like a new speedo head then.

Right, if this has had a new speedo head (i mean the clocks in the dash) fitted from a manual car, this will read completely wrong. It has to be an auto as the ratio's are different. I would go to breakers yard and see if you can get another speedo head from an auto.

Not sure if the engine size would matter, what would matter is the gearbox type. Just check that the gearbox is the same as yours before you buy the clocks. Another tip on jump starting, connect the leads up and go make a cup of tea for 20 mins while it charges up. Dont try to jump it as soon as you connect the leads, this causes the surge thats probably blown a resistor in your speedo head.

Good luck, i hope you get it fixed

Colorado speedometer reads high according to GPS

Find one of those radar displays that sit on the roadside and tell you how fast you're going. Most likely your GPS is the one that's off, because it has to average and estimate your speed, wheras the vehicle's speedometer should be good from the factory.

It is a 4x4 and I cant find the speed sensor that operates the speedometer. The speedometer sticks at 100mph at a dead stop. It also jumps around between 75 and 80 at random when I am only doing 45 mph.

On our Lincoln, the problem was the Alternator shorting and energizing the ground circuit with Positive juice. Our speedometer and odometer were both affected.

We had miles advancing and 45-50 MPH at a stop. Then inaccurate readings while the car was moving.

Car-stuff.com seems to have the best price for the actual speed sensor which is located in the differential @$11.94.

Please rate my solution and I hope I was helpful.

I would suspect you have a faulty electronic speedo head, have the cluster removed and have it sent out for repair of the problem. There is no at home repair procedure for this problem, it takes special equip to repair the speedo.

Speedometer is at 50 MPH when stopped

Try this. Turn the key on, do not start the vehicle. Absence the needle on the speedo. It should move down and then back up. Before it moves back up turn off the key. Repeat this until the needle is at zero. Then start the vehicle. If the needle goes back to a spot other than zero, you may have to take it for a quick drive, than the speedo head is likely bad. This is a pretty common an known issue for gm's. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Speedometer error?

Many cars have an error on the speed indicated. 10% sounds quite high, next time you buy tyres go for one size bigger or the next profile up, eg, if you are using 70 series go to 75 or 80. That will sort your problem out and you will get better fuel consumption. You can have the speedo calibrated but I would thing that the cost or effort wonuldn't justify the result.

Speedometer surging. actual speed 40 mph,

Its a loose connection on the speedo cable. its a b*tch to get to. I had the same problem on my truck, it would fluctuate in 5th gear on the highway. i spent the money and had a professional do it.
