If it is, in fact, on the far right side of the cluster, it is an O/D light - as in Over Drive.
You have either inadvertantly hit the Overdrive button, or the sensor has failed.
If it is On constantly, the Overdrive has been engaged.
Any idea if the trans was shuddering, slipping, etc? low or high miles?
If it's flashing, the PCM {computer} is probably kicking out a warning something is not right.
If you go to an autozone, advanced, etc parts store, use their code scanner, and it should pin point the issue.
Could be a sensor, or could a blown gasket, hard to say without scanning for code.
When was the last time it was serviced? Rule of thumb is 2 years for complete trans flush, not just a filter swap and draining the pan.

Dash lights quit working

When the dashboard lights in your vehicle malfunction or cease to operate, the resulting effects can range from being a mere annoyance to posing a safety hazard. Locating the problem and finding a remedy is essential. To fix dashboard lights that won't light, follow these suggestions

Evaluate the problem methodically. Begin the process by trying the simplest of solutions first. Most vehicles have a dashboard lights control switch that will dim the dashboard lights, as well as turn them off. Check the control switch, which should be located on the console near the steering column, make sure its in the correct position to have the lights on.

Check the dashboard light fuse. A blown fuse can disable the vehicle's dashboard light. The fuse box may be under the hood, or on the floor, near the brake pedal, or there may be 2 fuse boxes in both places. Refer to the diagram on the fuse box cover to locate the correct fuse. Replace the dashboard light fuse if necessary.

If all of the above don't fix it, then replace your light switch.

Hi, i have message appeared on dashboard volvo v50 2.0d 2005 "engine sistem service required", could you tell me what is that mean. thanks

Millage service message can be reset without dealer tools. However this is an error message. You need diagnostic tool to check the error code. All you can do right now is to enter hidden menu and check which module is reporting issue (DTC code).
