I need to know how to seperate my transmission from my block


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION C6
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. From in the engine compartment, remove the two upper converter housing-to-engine bolts.
  3. Disconnect the neutral switch wire at the in-line connector.
  4. Remove the bolt securing the fluid filler tube to the engine cylinder head.
  5. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  6. Place the drain pan under the transmission fluid pan. Starting at the rear of the pan and working toward the front, loosen the attaching bolts and allow the fluid to drain. Finally remove all of the pan attaching bolts except two at the front, to allow the fluid to further drain. With fluid drained, install two bolts on the rear side of the pan to temporarily hold it in place.
  7. Remove the converter drain plug access cover from the lower end of the converter housing.
  8. Remove the converter-to-flywheel attaching nuts. Place a wrench on the crankshaft pulley attaching bolt to turn the converter to gain access to the nuts.
  9. With the wrench on the crankshaft pulley attaching bolt, turn the converter to gain access to the converter drain plug. Place a drain pan under the converter to catch the fluid and remove the plug. After the fluid has been drained, reinstall the plug.
  10. On 2WD drive models, disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle and slide shaft rearward from the transmission. Install a seal installation tool in the extension housing to prevent fluid leakage.
  11. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the extension housing.
  12. Disconnect the downshift and manual linkage rods from the levers at the transmission.
  13. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the transmission.
  14. Remove the vacuum hose from the vacuum diaphragm unit. Remove the vacuum line retaining clip.
  15. Disconnect the cable from the terminal on the starter motor. Remove the three attaching bolts and remove the starter motor.
  16. On 4WD drive models remove the transfer case.
  17. Remove the two engine rear support and insulator assembly-to-attaching bolts.
  18. Remove the two engine rear support and insulator assembly-to-extension housing attaching bolts.
  19. Remove the six bolts securing the No. 2 crossmember to the frame side rails.
  20. Raise the transmission with a transmission jack and remove both crossmembers.
  21. Secure the transmission to the jack with the safety chain.
  22. Remove the remaining converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts.
  23. Move the transmission away from the engine. Lower the jack and remove the converter and transmission assembly from under the vehicle. To install:
  24. Tighten the converter drain plug.
  25. Position the converter on the transmission making sure the converter drive flats are fully engaged in the pump gear.
  26. With the converter properly installed, place the transmission on the jack. Secure the transmission on the jack with the chain.
  27. Rotate the converter until the studs and drain plug are in alignment with their holes in the flywheel.
  28. Move the converter and transmission assembly forward into position, using care not to damage the flywheel and the converter pilot. The converter must rest squarely against the flywheel. This indicates that the converter pilot is not binding in the engine crankshaft.
  29. Install the converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts and tighten them to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm) for the diesel; 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) for gasoline engines.
  30. Remove the transmission jack safety chain from around the transmission.
  31. Position the No. 2 crossmember to the frame side rails. Install and tighten the attaching bolts.
  32. Install transfer case on 4WD drive models.
  33. Position the engine rear support and insulator assembly above the crossmember. Install the rear support and insulator assembly-to-extension housing mounting bolts and tighten the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  34. Lower the transmission and remove the jack.
  35. Secure the engine rear support and insulator assembly to the crossmember with the attaching bolts and tighten them to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  36. The balance of installation is the reverse of removal.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle on hoist or stands.
  3. Place the drain pan under the transmission fluid pan. Starting at the rear of the pan and working toward the front, loosen the attaching bolts and allow the fluid to drain. Finally remove all of the pan attaching bolts except two at the front, to allow the fluid to further drain. With fluid drained, install two bolts on the rear side of the pan to temporarily hold it in place.
  4. Remove the converter drain plug access cover from the lower end of the converter.

  8. Disconnect the cable from the terminal on the starter motor. Remove the three attaching bolts and remove the starter motor. Disconnect the neutral start switch wires at the plug connector.
  9. Remove the rear mount-to-crossmember attaching bolts and the two crossmember-to-frame attaching bolts.
  10. Remove the two engine rear support-to-extension housing attaching bolts.
  11. Disconnect the TV linkage rod from the transmission TV lever. Disconnect the manual rod from the transmission manual lever at the transmission.
  12. Remove the two bolts securing the bell crank bracket to the converter housing.
  13. On 4WD drive models, remove the transfer case.
  14. Raise the transmission with a transmission jack to provide clearance to remove the crossmember. Remove the rear mount from the crossmember and remove the crossmember from the side supports.
  15. Lower the transmission to gain access to the oil cooler lines.
  16. Disconnect each oil line from the fittings on the transmission.
  17. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the extension housing.
  18. Remove the bolt that secures the transmission fluid filler tube to the cylinder block. Lift the filler tube and the dipstick from the transmission.
  19. Secure the transmission to the jack with the chain.
  20. Remove the converter housing-to-cylinder block attaching bolts.
  21. Carefully move the transmission and converter assembly away from the engine and, at the same time, lower the jack to clear the underside of the vehicle.
  22. Remove the converter and mount the transmission in a holding fixture.
  23. Tighten the converter drain plug. To install:
  24. Position the converter on the transmission, making sure the converter drive flats are fully engaged in the pump gear by rotating the converter.
  25. With the converter properly installed, place the transmission on the jack. Secure the transmission to the jack with a chain.
  26. Rotate the converter until the studs and drain plug are in alignment with the holes in the flywheel.
  27. Move the converter and transmission assembly forward into position, using care not to damage the flywheel and the converter pilot. The converter must rest squarely against the flywheel. This indicates that the converter pilot is not binding in the engine crankshaft.

Removal & Installation 4L60E/4L65E To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Transmission fluid
    • Transmission oil level indicator tube and seal from the transmission
    • Plug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
    • Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Shift cable end from the transmission shift lever ball stud
    • If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft.
    • Rear propeller shaft.
  2. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Starter motor.
    • Transfer case, if equipped.
  4. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  5. Remove the transmission mount nuts.
  6. Remove the transmission crossmember.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Flywheel to torque converter bolts
    • The two bolts securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission

    • Six studs and one bolt securing the transmission to the engine. Tighten the studs and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
    • Stud and bolt securing the transmission to the engine. Tighten the stud and the bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
    • Flywheel to torque converter bolts. Tighten the stud and the bolt to 46 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
    • Torque converter access plug.
    • Transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.
    • Two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission. Tighten the bolt to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
    • Two bolts securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Install the transmission crossmember. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  5. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.
  6. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  7. Install or connect the following:
    • Starter
    • Transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission
    • If equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft.
    • The rear propeller shaft
    • The shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud
  8. Unplug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
  9. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube and seal to the transmission.
  10. Tighten the oil pan bolts and fill the transmission with transmission fluid.

4L80E/4L85E To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Transmission fluid
    • Transmission oil level indicator tube and seal from the transmission
  2. Plug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Shift cable from the transmission shift lever ball stud
    • If 4WD vehicle, remove the propeller shaft.
    • If RWD vehicle, remove the propeller shaft.

  4. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Starter motor
  6. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.

    • The two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission
    • The transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness from the transmission
    • One nut and one bolt securing the transmission brace to the engine bracket and transmission
    • The two bolts securing the torque converter cover to the engine
    • The four bolts securing the torque converter cover to the transmission
    • The six flywheel to torque converter bolts
    • The two bolts and nut securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission
    • The stud and the bolt on the right side securing the transmission to the engine
    • The remaining six studs and the one bolt securing the transmission to the engine
    • Tool J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter

  8. Pull the transmission straight back. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  9. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines when you remove the transmission.

    • The four bolts securing the torque converter cover to the transmission. Tighten the stud and the bolt to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
    • The transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.
    • The two bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission. Tighten the bolt to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
    • The two bolts and nut securing the transmission rear mount to the transmission. Tighten the bolts and nut to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
    • The flywheel to torque converter bolts.
    • One nut and one bolt securing the transmission brace to the engine bracket and transmission. Tighten the bolts and nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
  6. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.
  7. Install or connect the following:
    • Starter motor
  8. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  9. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission.
  10. Install or connect the following:
    • The transfer case
    • The rear propeller shaft
    • The shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud
  11. Unplug the oil level indicator tube opening in the transmission.
  12. Install the transmission oil level indicator tube and seal to the transmission.
  13. Tighten the oil pan bolts and fill the transmission with transmission fluid.

Changing a transmission in a 1989 Buick Electra Park Avenue


Transmission REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Open the hood and place protectors on the fenders. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2. Disconnect the detent cable at its upper end.
  3. Remove the transmission oil dipstick, and the bolt holding the dipstick tube if it is accessible.
  4. Raise the vehicle and safety support it with jackstands. NOTE: If a floor pan reinforcement is used, remove it if it interferes with driveshaft removal or installation.
  5. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission.
  6. Disconnect the shift linkage at the transmission.
  7. Disconnect all electrical leads at the transmission and any clips that hold these leads to the transmission case.
  8. Remove the flywheel cover and matchmark the flywheel and torque converter for later assembly.
  9. Remove the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts and/or nuts.
  10. On gasoline engine vehicles, disconnect the catalytic converter support bracket.
  11. Remove the transmission support-to-transmission mount bolt and transmission support-to-frame bolts, and any insulators (if used).
  12. Position a transmission jack under the transmission and raise it slightly.
  13. Slide the transmission support rearward.
  14. Loosen the transmission enough to gain access to the oil cooler lines and detent cable attachments.
  15. Disconnect the oil cooler lines and detent cable. Plug all openings.
  16. Support the engine and remove the engine-to-transmission bolts.
  17. Disconnect the transmission assembly, being careful not to damage any cables, lines or linkage.
  18. Install a C-clamp or torque converter holding tool onto the transmission housing to hold the converter in the housing. Remove the transmission assembly from the vehicle (a hydraulic floor jack is best for this). To install: Fig. 1: Transmission oil cooler lines 85847023.gif

  19. Install the transmission assembly into the vehicle (a hydraulic floor jack is best for this). When installing the flex plate-to-converter bolts, make sure that the weld nuts on the converter are flush with the flex plate and that the converter rotates freely by hand. Coat the threads with thread locking compound, hand-start the three bolts, tighten them finger tight and torque them evenly to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  20. Support the engine and install the engine-to-transmission bolts. Torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  21. Connect the oil cooler lines and detent cable.
  22. Slide the transmission support forward.
  23. Position a transmission jack under the transmission and raise it slightly.
  24. Install the transmission support-to-transmission mount bolt and transmission support-to-frame bolts, and any insulators (if used).
  25. On gasoline engine vehicles, connect the catalytic converter support bracket.
  26. Install the flywheel cover.
  27. Connect all electrical leads to the transmission and any clips that hold these leads to the transmission case.
  28. Connect the shift linkage at the transmission.
  29. Connect the speedometer cable at the transmission.
  30. Check to see if all under vehicle components and fasteners are properly installed and torqued.
  31. Lower the vehicle safely.
  32. Install the transmission oil dipstick, and the bolt holding the dipstick tube if it is accessible.
  33. Connect the detent cable at its upper end.
  34. Connect the negative battery cable. Recheck all procedures for completion of repair. Close the hood and remove the protectors on the fenders.
  35. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refill the transmission with fluid as outlined in the "Oil Pan'' section in this chapter.

When changing the trans fluid on my 2004 Avalanche, I understand that you have to disconnect the trans lines from the radiator and run the engine until the fluid stops flowing. Is this correct? If so, do...


I didn't read about running the engine at all during the transmission fluid change. --- Removal & Installation 4L60E/4L65E To Remove:
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  3. If equipped with a drain plug, drain the transmission fluid.
  4. If necessary, remove the bolts and position aside the range selector cable bracket for clearance while lowering the pan. It is not necessary to remove the cable from the lever or bracket.
  5. Remove the catalytic converter.
  6. Remove the oil pan bolts from the front and sides of the pan only.
  7. Loosen the rear oil pan mounting bolts about 4 turns.
  8. Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet in order to loosen the pan and allow the fluid to drain.
  9. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts.
  10. Remove the oil pan and the gasket.
  11. Remove the filter by twisting and pulling on it.
  12. Remove and discard the filter seal. The filter seal may be stuck in the pump; if necessary, carefully use pliers or another suitable tool to remove the seal.
  13. Clean the transmission and the oil pan sealing surfaces with solvent, and air dry. You must remove all traces of the old gasket material.
To Install:
  1. Coat the new filter seal with transmission fluid.
  2. Install the new filter seal into the transmission case. Tap the seal into place using a suitable size socket.
  3. Install the new filter.
  4. Install the oil pan and new gasket. Tighten the bolts alternately and evenly to 97 lb in (11 Nm).
  5. Install the catalytic converter.
  6. If previously removed, install the range selector cable bracket and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 lb ft (25 Nm).
  7. Apply a small amount of sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480), or equivalent to the threads of the oil pan drain plug, if equipped.
  8. Install the oil pan drain plug, if equipped. Tighten the plug to 13 lb ft (18 Nm).
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
  11. Check the COLD fluid level reading for initial fill only.
  12. Inspect the oil pan gasket for leaks.
4L80E/4L85E To Remove:
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan. Drain the transmission fluid and install the plug. Tighten the drain plug to 13 lb ft (18 Nm).
  3. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  4. Remove the transmission crossmember.
  5. Disconnect the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud. NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the selector cable from the bracket.
  6. Remove the transmission range selector cable bracket. Reposition the bracket and cable.
  7. Remove the oil pan bolts. NOTE: The transmission oil pan gasket is reusable. Replace as needed.
  8. Remove the oil pan and gasket.
  9. Remove the magnet from the bottom of the pan, if necessary.
  10. Remove the oil filter and neck seal.
To Install:
  1. Clean the transmission and the oil pan sealing surfaces with solvent.
  2. Install the filter neck seal and filter.
  3. Install the oil pan gasket to the pan.
  4. Install the magnet into the bottom of the pan, if necessary.
  5. Install the oil pan and bolts. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 18 lb ft (24 Nm).
  6. Install the transmission range selector cable bracket. Tighten the bolts to 18 lb ft (25 Nm).
  7. Connect the range selector cable end to the transmission range selector lever ball stud.
  8. Install the transmission crossmember. Tighten the fasteners to 70 lb ft (95 Nm).
  9. Install the transmission mount nuts. Tighten the nuts to 30 lb ft (40 Nm).
  10. Remove the transmission jack.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.

3.8L Engine - There's a lot of stuff here.
  1. Take the vehicle to a reputable repair shop to have the refrigerant discharged and recovered.
  2. Disconnect the negative, then the positive battery cables.
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor and condenser hose from the accumulator.
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
  7. Drain the coolant and engine oil into suitable containers.
  8. Remove the 3-way catalytic converter.
  9. Remove the front fascia lower deflectors.
  10. Remove the stabilizer bar bushing bolts.
  11. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the radiator.
  12. If equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following:
    1. Remove the transmission converter bolts.
    2. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the radiator.
    3. Remove the transmission range selector lever cable from the transmission.
    4. Remove the left and right transmission support brackets.
  13. If equipped with manual transmissions, perform the following:
    1. Remove the transmission control lever handle.
    2. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder line from the actuator.
  14. Remove the propeller (drive) shaft.
  15. Remove the torque arm from the transmission.
  16. Remove the steering gear coupling shaft from the rack and pinion.
  17. Remove the electrical ground strap from the engine block.
  18. Remove the starter motor.
  19. Remove the A/C compressor and condenser hose from the compressor and from the condenser.
  20. Remove the negative battery cable from the rear compressor bracket mounting stud.
  21. Remove the engine coolant heater cord from the block.
  22. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  23. Remove the A/C compressor and condenser hose from the vehicle.
  24. Remove the heater hoses from the drive belt tensioner.
  25. Remove the air cleaner outlet rear duct. Remove the resonator duct.
  26. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel rail.
  27. Disconnect the cruise control cable from the throttle body. Disconnect the accelerator control cable from the throttle body.
  28. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing.
  29. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
  30. Remove the bracket lines and the clips from the ABS hydraulic modulator.
  31. Remove the right-hand body hinge pillar trim panel.
  32. Detach the engine wiring harness connectors.
  33. Remove the forward lamp wiring harness connectors.
  34. Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the wiring harness and place them on top of the engine.
  35. Remove the engine wiring harness through the front of the engine, then place on top of the engine.
  36. Disconnect the positive lead from the alternator.
  37. Remove the lower shock attachment nuts and bolts from the lower control arms.
  38. Remove the upper control and ball stud from the steering knuckle. Use the upper control arm in order to secure the struts to the outboard.
  39. Remove the wheel speed connectors from the engine frame.
  40. Position a suitable engine support table under the engine and frame.
  41. Remove the engine frame and transmission support bolts.
  42. Raise the vehicle from the engine, the transmission and the engine frame.
  43. Remove the transmission.
  44. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the clutch housing and the clutch.
  45. Remove the engine mount though bolts.
  46. Remove the engine from the engine frame. To install:
  47. Position the engine to the engine frame.
  48. Install the engine mount through bolts.
  49. Install the transmission.
  50. Position the engine lift table. Lower the vehicle to the crossmember in order to install the engine, transmission and engine frame.
  51. Install engine frame and transmission support bolts, then remove the engine lift table.
  52. Attach the electrical connectors to the wheel speed sensors.
  53. Install the upper control arm ball stud to the steering knuckle.
  54. Install the lower shock attachment bolts and nuts to the lower control arm.
  55. Connect the positive lead to the generator. NOTE: When routing the engine wiring harness through the front of the dash, the rubber grommet must be installed properly to ensure correct sealing. If the rubber grommet is damaged, replace it.
  56. Install the engine wiring harness through the front of the dash.
  57. Install the PCM and PCM harness.
  58. Install the forward lamp wiring harness connectors and the engine wiring harness connectors.
  59. Install the right-hand body hinge trim panel.
  60. Install the brake lines and clips to the ABS hydraulic modulator. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose.
  61. Connect the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat.
  62. Connect the cruise control and accelerator cables to the throttle body.
  63. Attach the fuel lines to the fuel rail.
  64. Install the air cleaner outlet rear duct and resonator duct.
  65. Connect the heater hoses to the drive belt tensioner.
  66. Attach the A/C compressor and condenser hose.
  67. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  68. Connect the engine coolant heater cord to the block.
  69. Connect the negative battery cable to the rear compressor bracket mounting stud.
  70. Install the A/C compressor and condenser hose to their respective components.
  71. Install the starter motor.
  72. Fasten the electrical ground strap to the engine block.
  73. Install the steering gear coupling shaft to the rack and pinion.
  74. Connect the power steering inlet and outlet hoses to the steering gear.
  75. Install the torque arm to the transmission.
  76. Install the propeller shaft.
  77. Connect the shift linkage to the transmission.
  78. Attach the radiator inlet hose to the radiator.
  79. If equipped with a manual transmission, attach the clutch actuator cylinder line to the actuator and install the transmission control lever.
  80. If equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following:
    1. Install the left and right transmission support brackets.
    2. Install the transmission range selector lever cable to the transmission.
    3. Attach the transmission fluid oil cooler lines to the radiator.
    4. Install the transmission converter bolts.
  81. Install the stabilizer bar bushing bolts.
  82. Install the front fascia lower deflectors.
  83. Install the 3-way catalytic converter.
  84. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  85. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  86. Refill the engine with the proper amounts of coolant and engine oil.
  87. Connect the positive, then the negative battery cables.
  88. Properly bleed the brake system.
  89. Take the vehicle to a reputable repair shop to have the A/C system charged and the wheels aligned.

Is the Transmission sealed, can not change the filter and fluid? Where is the radiator, is it also sealed, can water only be put in the overflow?


The transmission is not sealed in the v8 I looked up. It's bolted together. prev.gif next.gif Fluid Pan Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section
  2. Raise and support the vehicle
  3. Place a drain pan under the transmission fluid pan
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Drain plug and drain the fluid
    • Shifter cable bracket NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage; if not damaged, the gasket should be reused.
    • Fluid pan and gasket
    • Transmission fluid filter
    • Clean and inspect the transmission fluid pan and magnet
    • Converter housing access plug
    • Converter drain plug
To Install:
NOTE: A new converter drain plug must be used to prevent leakage.
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Install the converter drain plug. Torque to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm)
    • Install the converter housing access plug
  2. Lubricate the seals and install the transmission fluid filter. Torque the bolts to 89 in-lbs (10 Nm)
  3. Install the oil pan magnet in the transmission fluid pan NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage; if not damaged, the gasket should be reused.
  4. Install the transmission fluid pan and gasket and loosely install the screws.
  5. Using a crisscross sequence, torque the screws to 8 ft-lbs (11 Nm)
  6. Install the shifter cable bracket. Torque bolts to 18 ft-lbs (25 Nm)
  7. Install the drain plug. Torque to 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) NOTE: It will be necessary to hold the drain plug (larger plug) with a wrench when removing the fluid level indicator plug.
    NOTE: Use 3/16 inch Allen key to remove the fluid level indicator plug. Remove the fluid level indicator plug.
  8. Verify the transmission fluid level

How to remove a radiator from a ford taurus


Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove battery. Remove battery tray. Remove clip retaining contant control relay module and position module aside. Remove radiator cap. Raise vehicle front end as high as possible. Remove radiator splash shield. Drain radiator. Remove the radiator mounting bracket assembly. Remove lower radiator hose. Partially lower vehicle. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove radiator overflow hose. Remove upper A/C condenser core retaining bolts. Remove upper transmission oil cooler tube clips. Remove lower transmission oil cooler tube. Raise vehicle. Remove lower transmission oil cooler tube clips. Remove lower transmission oil cooler tube. Remove transmission oil cooler bracket and position transmission oil cooler aside. Remove lower A/C condenser core bolts and position A/C condenser core aside(be careful not to loosen the AC condenser lines. Remove radiator support bracket. Remove radiator out through the bottom of the vehicle.
Installation
Position radiator. Position radiator support bracket and tighten nuts. Position A/C condenser core and tighten lower A/C condenser core bolts. Position transmission oil cooler tube and install transmission oil cooler tube bracket. Install lower transmission oil cooler tube. Install lower transmission oil cooler tube clips. Install lower radiator hose. Install radiator mounting bracket assembly. Tighten bolts. Install radiator splash shield. Lower vehicle. Install upper tranmission oil cooler tube. Install upper transmission oil cooler tube clips. Install upper A/C condenser core retaining bolts. Tighten bolts. Install radiator overflow hose and tighten clamps securely. Install upper radiator hose. Position constant control relay module and clip securely. Install battery tray. Install battery. Connect battery ground cable. Fill and bleed cooling system. Start engine and inspect for leaks.

Removing tranny


Ok..
This is the prosses to remove and install your Transmission.

1---Disconnect negative Battery cable. Remove Air cleaner. Disconnect shift cable from Transmission. Raise and support Vehicle. Drain Transmission fluid. Disconnect shift Linkage. Mark rear drive shaft for installation reference and fremove from vehicle. Mark front drive shaft and Remove from transfer case.
Warning.. ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection related component DO NOT allow fuel to contact electrical components.

2-- Relieve fuel pressure, and remove fuel lines from the Bracket support at catalistyc converter
And remove the bracket. support transmission with transmission jack or any compatible.
Remove transmission crossmember.
NOTE .. DO NOT stretch or damage any cables, wires or other components when lowering transmission.

3-- Lower transmission far enough to provide clearence for other components. remove dipstick tube and seal. cover opening in transmission. remove speedometer harness. remove electrical connectors from transmission. remove cooler lines, and cap all openings. remove starter motor.

4-- Remove transfer case shifter and move it aside, Remove transmission support braces. Note braces locatoin for installation. Remove converter housing cover. Mark flexplate( flywhell) and Torque converter for alingment during installation, Remove flywheel to torque converter BOLTS.

Remove transmission to Engine BOLTS. note location of any brackets or clips and move them aside. Slide transmission straight back, off locating pins, remove transmission from vehicle.

6-- To install, reverse removal procedure. Torque converter must be against flywheel and rotate
FREELY by HAND, ensure all reference mark aling. and tighten all BOLTS..

NOTE. In some cases is nessesary remove the Transfer case before the transmission.
The transfer case is attached at the transmission with six Bolt .....

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the gearshift lever assembly from the control housing.
  3. Cover the opening in the control housing with a cloth to prevent dirt from falling into the unit.
  4. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  5. On 2WD vehicles, matchmark the driveshaft to the rear axle flange. Position a drain pan under the tailend of the transmission. Remove the driveshaft-to-rear axle flange fasteners and pull the driveshaft rearward to disconnect it from the transmission.
  6. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line a the clutch housing. Plug the lines.
  7. Disconnect the speedometer from the transfer case/extension housing.
  8. Disconnect the starter motor, back-up lamp and, if equipped, neutral sensing switch harness connector.
  9. Place a wood block on a service jack and position the jack under the engine oil pan.
  10. On 4WD vehicles, remove the transfer case from the vehicle.
  11. Remove the starter motor.
  12. Position a transmission jack, under the transmission.
  13. Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts and washers.
  14. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the transmission mount and damper to the crossmember.
  15. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the crossmember to the frame side rails and remove the crossmember.
  16. Lower the engine jack slightly to angle the transmission assembly. Work the clutch housing off the locating dowels and slide the clutch housing and the transmission rearward until the input shaft clears the clutch disc.
  17. Lower the transmission jack and remove the transmission from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Check that the mating surfaces of the clutch housing, engine rear and dowel holes are free of burrs, dirt and paint.
  2. Place the transmission on the transmission jack. Position the transmission under the vehicle, then raise it into position. Align the input shaft splines with the clutch disc splines and work the transmission forward into the locating dowels.
  3. Install the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts and washers. Tighten the retaining bolts to specifications. Remove the transmission jack.
  4. Install the starter motor. Tighten the attaching nuts.
  5. Raise the engine and install the rear crossmember, insulator and damper and attaching nuts and bolts. Tighten and torque the bolts to specification.
  6. On 4WD vehicles, install the transfer case.
  7. On 2WD vehicles, insert the driveshaft into the transmission extension housing and install the center bearing attaching nuts, washers and lockwashers. Connect the driveshaft to the rear axle drive flange.
  8. Connect the starter motor, back-up lamp and, if equipped, neutral sensing switch connectors.
  9. Connect the hydraulic clutch line and bleed the system.
  10. Install the speedometer cable.
  11. Check and adjust the fluid level.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Install the gearshift lever assembly. Install the boot cover and bolts.
  14. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  15. Check for proper shifting and operation of the transmission.
