Some Ani-freeze from time to time under van, top radiator hose cold, no heat

3.3 liter motor with air, had fluid level ckeck a month ago it was o.k. But now you can not even see the level with cap off. temp gage shows half way not over heating. what gives???

You should check the coolant level every week when you have a leak. The level in the radiator is probably low, and it could also have air in the system now. Try filling it up and then check it again tomorrow until you know it is full.

What engine do u have? It can also be your head gasket leaking coolent internally.

Replace the bad radiator hose first.  Second- get you special formulated anti-freeze dye from the auto store and pour it into the radiator.  Third- make sure you got all the air pockets out of your system, cause the coolant system won't work with air pockets in it.  Fourth- Check for leaks by looking for the colored dye.  If it's not the radiator hose, then could possibly be a pin hole in your radiator.  Would suggest replacing all the radiator hoses at the same time while you got the coolant system disconnected, cause you don't want to have to come back and replace another hose in a few months.

First thing first, turn off the engine wait for 15 - 20 mints, open the radiator cap and fill it up to the top then start the engine and see if it needs more water adn add as needed, then wait till you ca see the water circulating in the radiator now instead of corculating if it starts boiling out shut the engine replace the thermostat and do the whole thing again.

unless there is water in the engine the gauge will not be able to show the actual temp of the engine, so always malke sure you have water / antifreeze

Why was radiator replaced?Did it have heat before ? If it was plugged, the heater core may also be plugged. Try flushing it with a water hose in both directions. I dont know why the botton radiator hose would be cold, the radiator should be a uniform temp and the air coming through the radiator should be HOT, when the engine is at operating temp. What condition was the old coolant? if it was rusty, the water pump may have lower flow than normal.

Your anti freeze was weak and froze.the belts squealing was due from the pump was froze (ice). Put your car in your garage and use a heat gun around the engine block to warm the metal so internal temperature will rise and melt the ice.once defrosted star the car and check coolant level.use hydromiter to check your anti freeze. Should be 30 to 40 below zero.

My 2003 Nissan Sentra has been experiencing overheating problems for almost a year now. I have Changed the Thermostat 3 times and the radiator and the water pump and the hoses. I also changed the cool


I am right now experiencing and dealing with the same problem. My car is a 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8. I first changed the thermostat, but that is not necessary in many cases.
Remove the radiator cap and wrap a paper clip around the center of it, just under where the flat piece of metal retains the rubber seal. (See image below.) This will allow water and air to escape the radiator and go into the reservoir. Put a hydraulic jack under the front of your car in the center (there is a factory 'nipple' there for just this use). Jack the front of your car up until the front tires just leave the ground (best done on hard, flat surface). This will allow air to travel up the motor & head, out through the hose and exit the top of the radiator and into the reservoir. Be sure the radiator is full of anti-freeze/coolant. NOT just water, because you will have to go through all this again before winter. Place the 'altered' cap on the radiator and start the car. Let the car run until the temp comes up to normal operating temperature. The coolant should now fill the reservoir. Now, turn the car off and do nothing else, for now. Wait until the motor is cool and the coolant in the reservoir should go back into the radiator. DO NOT allow the reservoir to get empty, or air will enter again and you will have to repeat all this again! If you keep enough coolant in the reservoir tank, the cooling motor will draw pure coolant/anti-freeze back, leaving the air out. When the motor is cool, be sure the coolant level in the reservoir is at the "Cold" or "Min" mark. Start the car again and watch the reservoir through the filler hole. You should begin to see air bubbles exiting into the tank. This is GOOD! Allow the motor to run at idle until you see no more air bubbles (probably 10 minutes or more). Add coolant as necessary as the level will probably drop a little as the engine's fan comes on, causing negative pressure in the motor/radiator. Make sure the reservoir coolant tank level is at "Hot" or Max" and turn the motor off again. After repeating this process two or three times, the heater will probably put out a "little" heat, but not a lot. If the heater begins producing max heat, your job is probably done. With the paper clip still in the radiator cap, put it out on the road, where you can get it up to speed (55 - 65 mph) and watch your temp gauge. At some point, the temp should drop down to normal and the heater work good again. The key is getting ALL the air out of the motor and head, without drawing the air back inside.
When everything is good (hopefully running cool and heater working), allow the motor to cool down (COLD) and remove the paper clip from the radiator cap.
Do this ONLY when the motor is COLD, or you could create another air pocket. Do not add coolant/anti-freeze to the radiator at this time (REALLY!). Just replace the cap and add fluid to the reservoir, if needed.

check you coolant level. thos car are known for head gasket. if its a 2.2 liter check the fron right of the engine between cylinder head and engine block. if its a 3.1 the cylinder head crack behind the alternator mount. could also be you coolant thermostat. hope it help

"How do I get the air out of my hydraulic system"?
  • Remove the reservoir plug on the motor pump. Leave the plug out and do not put back until you have finished.
  • Fill the reservoir 3/4 full with fluid (to the bottom of filler plug hole). Put a rag under the hole to catch overflow that will occur as system fills.
  • Run the pump for 15-20 seconds. Stop. Check your fluid level and refill to bottom of filler hole. Continue running the motor in the same direction for an additional 15-20 seconds. When the top gets to the end of cycle, check your fluid level, fill to bottom of filler hole, and run the motor in the opposite direction.
  • You are literally running the top all the way up and down sereral times. Checking the fluid level as you go and fill as required, leaving reservoir 25% empty.
  • When you are no longer able to add fluid, put the top in the down position. Check the fluid level one last time, should be to bottom of filler hole. Put the plug into reservoir.

    Anything special i need to know when changing my anti-freeze. this is my first time, trying to save money. someone said something about getting the air out? what does that mean?


    drain the coolant, connect or close all hoses and drain plugs,start motor and fill radiator with a 50/50 mix of water and anti-freeze, leave engine running,when motor gets hot the thermostat will open allowing the coolant to flow through the motor, in change the anti-freeze will get lower in the radiator thus you continue to fill untill full and the radiator will not except more coolant, ( this is how you get the air out) replace radiator cap and fill reservoir to cold level and your done. Recheck your coolant reservoir after you have driven the vehicle a bit and fill if necessary, do not fill to top, only fill to cool mark. the reservoir is not under pressure so you can fill at any time motor hot or cold

    Hello, I am the owner of a 2005 jaguar x-type. Upon start up when driving away I notice a "gurgling" sound coming from the engine in the location of the glove box.


    Sounds like air in cooling system. Coolant comes through to back of glove box area for your heat supply.
    Have you noticed less available heat than normal?

    Check the coolant level in radiator, not just the top up bottle. DO THIS WHEN ENGINE IS COLD as hot system is under pressure.

    Possibility of head gasket leak suppling gases to coolant system. IF so may be producing some persistant heavy white steamy exhaust, though not necessarily.

    Topping up coolant will (should) make noise go away at least temporarily. You should look to see if any obvious leaks or wet spots at hose clamps and heater hose connections.

    When engine is cold, open Radiator cap, look down (flash light helps?) to see fluid level, should be full to top.
    If not, top up with correct coolant mix, leaving cap off, start motor and allow to idle till warm. If level drops top off some more. Watch the fluid as it flows past cap opening. a few bubbles for a few mins may be normal, but continous stream of bubbles indicate head gasket leak. Turn on the heat in car to full, (not the fan, just heat level) gently rev the engine and top up fluid at same time, (2 people) replace cap. Done. If there are no apparent problems.

    If noise returns or does not go away, you'll need a professional inspection.

    Hi, the likely problem is a bubble forming in the system, possibly due to a head gasket failure.

    Try stopping on a steep incline--does the heater stay warm? If yes, what you have is an air bubble that hangs at the heater hose until pressure from the water pump blows thru it as the engine speeds up. Park on an incline, open the radiator cap, run the engine until the thermostat is open, turn the heater on, crack open any/all bleed ports to release any trapped air, and fill the radiator to the neck. Wait until the level stops dropping and make sure bubbles don't continue to come up. If they do, you may have a blown head gasket that will keep forming these bubbles until you change the gasket.

    No heat while idling


    Check the radiator, top it off with anti freeze. If it's low then you will most likely have a bad radiator cap or hose going to the overflow tank. If the Antifreeze is ok then the next thing to check is for a vachumm leak, you have no vachum at idle and you should have vachum at highest level. So check the fluid level first.

    Radiator fluid evaporation or leak?


    Just had the same problem! I have never had any problems out of my van and just had all fluids checked a month ago before going on vacation. One day it just started overheating and I had to urn the heater to pull the heat off of the motor to keep it cool enough to get it home. I put over a gallon of coolant in it and filled up the reserve tank. The next morning I took my kids to school about 4 miles away and my van started to miss really bad and the check engine light would come on every time I pressed down on the accelerator. I took it home and opened the hood and the reserve coolant tank was empty in just 8 miles of travel so I called the dealer and had them pick it up on a rollback since it is still under warranty. The dealer said it was a leak in the rear heater pipes that circulate antifreeze/coolant to the rear of the vehicle to supply heat for the rear heater and the miss was from the heat of the engine burning the spark plugs. So far it is a dealer item only and parts and labor are about $352. The vehicle will not leave any puddles when running while in park, only leak while moving, so they tell me. The dealer bypassed it somehow until my parts come in and my van drives fine. The pipes (maybe hoses,unsure) are actually a series of 3 that must be replaced. I may try to change them myself if they are just hoses.
