Question about 1999 Volkswagen Golf

Heater not working, engine fan keeps coming on

The fan inside the car does work although the heater does not i.e.: it never gets warm/hot.

When I turn the car off I notice that the engine fan (to cool it) is on, when it should not be.

Thanks for any help, my wife is killing me!!

Check to see if you have an air lock in the water system take of a hose and flush it through
also check to see if heater hoses are getting warm is there enough water in radiator
top rhs of engineis a bypass pipe lots of folk remove it and replace with straight pipe

2000 caddy Seville ...after starting and engine warm turn on the heater and it blows cold air. Fan works / waiting for hot air and then all the sudden it kicks in. Engine at normal temp


Low coolant, if there is an air pocket in the engine it will make it to the heater core. Once there , the air coming out is cold/cool. Once the coolant fills the heater core, it gets hot. If the coolant is fine hot or cold, then have the HVAC system scanned.

Heater runs but does not heat


If it is blowing air at different speeds inside the car, I think you are saying the blower works fine, but blows no heat.
If it is running different speeds but is not blowing inside the car, you probably have a plastic flap inside the heater assembly inside the car that is not opening, not allowing the air to come in.
That might likely be a vacuum issue, or maybe a mechanical one. (whatever is supposed to open the flap)

If the flap is working and you are getting different amounts of air inside the car according to the speed of the blower fan setting you have selected, go to the engine temperature.
Is the radiator getting hot?
Have you a temperature gauge to tell if the engine is hot?
If not, you will need to warm up the engine, and then determine if there is hot water in the radiator.
If you pull off the cap to see, it could blow up on your face, so you will need to find someone who can help you with this.
If the radiator is hot after about 10-15 minutes of the motor running, you are perhaps not getting hot water to the heater.
You would need to check the temperature control to see if it is working. This is often a mechanical switch located near the firewall of the Jeep under the hood. Usually it is the size of a small fist, and has a heater hose running into and out of it, and has a wire attached to the top.
It might have a wire to it that should move when you select hot or cold inside the jeep at the control panel. Sometimes the control wire will rust or break.. The heater hoses should be hot if the hot water is running through them.
If your radiator is low on coolant, often the heater inside the car will not work.

The radiator fan is not coming on when warm, but I still have heat and not over-heating?


Your heater blower, inside the car works to provide heat to the interior of your car, and the air is hot, right? If the cooling fan is not coming on, depending on the outside ambient temperature, you may be using your heater coil for the heater to dispell suficient heat (inside the car), combined with a low outside temperature to keep the engine at normal operating temperature negating the need for the cooling fan. OR your coolant temperature sensor is bad, and the ECU doesn't know that the engine is hot and to turn on the fan. This sensor works by changing the voltage returned to the ECU depending on the temperature of the tip, which changes the resistance to the computers inquiry. So, the computer knows the temp of the coolant. It uses this information to adjust mixture gauge etc. Most now have 2. One for the gauge, and another for the ECU. So don't go by the gauge working. Then there is the fan motor itself. This can be tested by using a testlight on the wires when the engine temperature gauge in at 3/4 to the hot side of the gauge. The other way to test is to bring a live wire to the motor. If the motor is good, the sensor is bad, if the motor is bad, well the motors bad. It is most probably the problem with blend door or blend door actuator. But just in case I would suggest to follow the entire procedure:

First you have to identify what causes the problem.
To do this you have to:
1) When engine is cold check the level of coolant. If it is low fill it up.
2) Start engine and check if engine reaches regular temperature. If your engine is not heated enough it means your thermostat does not work properly and should be replaced
3) If engine temperature is normal, then check the temperature of pipes that go to/from heater core. These pipes are located up the fire wall (easier access is from the passenger side). If pipe/pipes are cold (even engine is warm) it means you heater core is plugged and should be flushed. Keep in mind, flushing the whole cooling system is different from flushing heater core.
4) If pipe/pipes are hot/warm, turn off the fan, switch controller to the hot position, wait for 3-4 minutes and turn on the fan. Note if the cold air blows first or warm air blows first but it cools down in 5-10 seconds. If the air blows cold than it is most probably the problem with blend door or blend door actuator.
5) If air blows warm first and then cools down, then while running engine and remaining the transmission in PARKING position, press on the gas pedal until your engine reaches 3,000 RPM. Check if your heater blows warm/hot air. If it does, then your water pump does not work properly and should be replaced. If the air still cold, I would suggest flushing the heater core.

Ford Festiva 1998 heater not working.


CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL. IF IT IS TOO LOW, THEN THE HEATER CORE WILL NOT GIVE YOU HEAT LIKE IT IS SUPPOSE TO. OR PERHAPS THE HEATER CORE IS CLOGGED. CHECK IT OUT AND KEEP ME POSTED PLEASE. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA AND FOR AN HONEST RATING TOO. GOOD LUCK

the blendor actuators strip out the gear inside the actuator cases on these all the time. replace the actuator.

Heater not working, blower does work but not hot


Sounds like Heater matrix blocked, check pipes going from engine bay into bulk head both should be getting hot if one is not then may be worth removing pipes and trying to flush it through as would be expensive to renew it as its a large job.

HEATER DOES NOT STAY HOT IT STARTS THEN IT GOES COLD


Check the heater core for a clog or the heater control valve. The easiest was to check these is allow heater to run for a few minutes and check the two hoses coming from under the hood against the fire wall. They should both be hot. If they are not, you have one of the above problems. Start with the heater control valve and replace it. It is much cheaper than than a heater core. Next, you will need to pull the lines from the firewall and see is rust starts coming out of the lines, if so, you may be able to flush the system and clear the blockage. After that, if it does not work, it will require replacing the heater core, which is no easy or cheap feat.
