How to replace battery cables on a 2001 mustang conv 3.8L V6 eng

Firstly, take note of your radio codes then get a small motorcycle battery and make up or buy a jumper plug that goes in your cigar lighter socket, ensuring you have the polarity correct. This will keep any codes alive when you disconnect the main battery. Make sure the ignition key is OUT because the cigar socket won't take any current. Remove the negative cable first. Then the positive. Replace the positive cable from the battery to starter terminal or where ever its fitted. Replace the negative / ground cable ensuring a good clean ground is made. When both cables are properly clipped up as per the original arrangement then reattach the Positive first, then the Neg or ground next. Remove your temporary battery from the cigar socket and with a bit of luck your radio codes should be good. Take your time and check out how difficult it is to reach the starter terminal connection before you start. Some are a bi*ch.

1. Check positive/negative battery cables at battery-- no corrosion wanted and tight clamp.

2. check + battery cable at starter and wires at starter solenoid.

3. check - battery cable ground connection point.

4. check main power fuse/fusible link.

Second wire in engine compartment fuse box melted? where does wire go?

secondary ground wire fried!!? this tells me that your main ground did lose its contact somewhere.usually opposite the battery side. when this happens, and you try to say, start the car, all that amperage will follow any available ground it can find, usually through the actual wiring harness that covers the entire car. see, most vehicles have 2 ground cable setups..a main, and a secondary.. the main consists of the large cables as well as "ground straps" which look flat and are made of braided wire and run from the car body to the block and areas like that. now if these fail or loose connection, the only other source for grounding will be the loop i the harness which is not big enough to handle the amperage needed to run the starter motor when activated by the ignition key. now since yours burnt up, it must be replaced and all ground wires checked..also check for shorts in the system elsewhere, with a meter if necesary, you can also disconnect the battery entirely and connect a 6 amp battery charger directly to the cables(like charging the car without the battery) and if there is a short, the guage on the charger will peg over without fear of fire you will hear a buzzing sound where the short is (usually)..I have used this trick to find shorted blower heater motors or wiper motors on big trucks..if this ground wire is wrapped into the actual harness setup, you will need to replace it by cutting loose the old one, run a new wire into any part of the system thats not damaged, usually near the headlight fixtures, then run it back to the original starting point ,then its process of elimination as to what will work and what wont, remember, all circuits will function some with the charger attached instead of the battery, you will hear a buzzing or humming especially when checking the radio..good luck

I can't find the main ground in my 98 buick lesabre. Can anyone help?

Unless I am missing your question, there is no main ground.
The battery cable is grounded to the engine and the engine has a ground cable back to the body or frame. That cable may also have a smaller wire going to a body ground. The car uses the body to connect ground cables to for components to get power back to the battery.

I have a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country, the battery light comes on intermittent, and there is a ground strap going from the motor mount to the frame that is burned off at the frame, also now that the...

The ground strap is the main engine ground. When you try to start the vehicle there is power available to the starter but since the starter uses the engine for a ground and the engine uses the ground cable to ground itself to the battery and that cable is no longer in tacked you have an open circuit. Fix or replace that cable and at least one if not both of your problems should be solved.

98 Ford Explorer, will not start. No power from battery to key, no inside lights, no radio, no dome light, no sound when the key os on and the door is open (should beep). New battery, checked fuses, can't...

It appears your battery is not properly connected or your main ground cable is bad or your main power cable is loose or has a bad connector downstream from the battery. First check the battery cables first to make sure the cables are tight. Make sure the battery posts are not reversed (red to +) and black ground cable to -. Try a set of jumper cables from another car and if that works you know it's still a problem with your battery. Also, you could have a bad main fuse starter relay out in the large main fuse distribution panel under the hood, but I do not believe this would affect headlights, inside lights, door warnings, etc. What you are describing is what you would experience if the battery is totally dead (drained from leaving inside lights on for example).

My throttle cable got hot and melted the covering freezing the free movement of the cable. A friend replaced my battery and put new clamps on the cables. He had to hook up a second smaller ground cable to...

What actually happened was because the engine wasn't properly grounded your throttle cable became the ground. As it is not heavy enough to carry the amperage, it got hot and melted. The repair is easy...Just make sure you have a good heavy ground wire on the battery, attached to the engine block, and another between the block and the firewall. Obviously, you need to change the throttle cable and also check the shift cable as well.
