Misfire in one cylinder, low evaporation of fuel due to cold weather or probably battery is not giving enough charge (low voltage). You can check your car for trouble codes for free in bearest autozone store (if you are in US)
Good Luck

1988 Town Car Signature won't start mornings -- fine otherwise

When you first start the vehicle in the morning, try turning the key to ON for ten seconds before starting the vehicle. If your engine then starts immediately, replace the fuel pressure regulator. If it does not solve the problem, perform a major tune-up.
If your CHECK ENGINE light is illuminated, check ODB codes to determine fault.
The 5.0L engine in the 1988 Town Car is one of the most reliable engines ever built by Ford, mostly because it is adept at masking problems for a long time before a failure happens. You will find that most failures you encounter will either be fuel-related (usually a clogged fuel filter) or burned spark plug wires.

2000 Land Cruiser flashing check engine light and the car is running rough/shuddering

The warning light is telling you the computer has found a problem that is affecting engine performance and fuel mileage. A flashing light means it is something serious.
You should have someone scan the computer for trouble codes and go from there. The codes will help direct the mechanic as to what to test.

I recently bought a 2001 avalon with 139k runs and drives great but check engine light came on, we did oil change and did not go out but also have noticed white smoke coming from tailpipe when cranked for...

First, the check engine light is telling you there is a problem with the emissions or performance of the engine. You need to have someone scan the computer for trouble codes.
The smoke in the morning could be a leaking head gasket - something is leaking into the cylinders and being burned.

Hard starting with check engine light and hold light on

If your check engine light is on, take the car to your local auto parts superstore and have them scan for the fault codes. Usually it is free. The fault code will tell you where to start to solve the problem. Hope this helps.
