Question about 1996 Honda Odyssey

1 Answer

1996 honda odyssey - after warm up, at highway speed 65 mph and accellerating (up a hill etc) makes a vibration or engine missing. It gets steadily worse, happens at lower speeds and in lower gear as

The repair shop said there was nothing wrong with the engine running. I left it another day and they said they could not reproduce the problem. On the third day I drove it around town at 45 mph for about 30 minutes before I could get it to produce the problem and then took the repairman for a ride. They gave up after that day. Drove it home on the freeway and immediately acted up at 60-65 mph. Not sure what to do with it next.

If the engine is misfiring you would have a blinking check engine light and a fault code stored for the cylinder that is misfir9ing is that the case? If it was me I would replace the spark plug wires, they are cheap and most likely the problem.

if this problem only happens when the eco light is on, then you prob have a bad rear engine mount. these vans have active front and rear engine mounts. when the engine is in VCM mode(operating on 3cyl) the front and rear engine mounts control the engine vibrations. when the rear one goes bad it connot control the engine vibrations. the rear mount can be visually inspected for failure(if its resting on itself), or on a test drive with the active noise control turned off. or engine brake torquing.

could be a few things the start up could be the idle air control sensor (my first thought), the coolant temp sensor for the computer might be a secondary thought for the engine being cold if the computer thinks its warm. that would be the first 2 places i would start without a check engine light or code to reference

Shaking at low speed (25-30 mph)

low speed shakes indicates a wheel alignment problem
have the suspension and wheel bearings checked out by an accredited suspension shop
under acceleration it could be engine mounts cracked in the rubber being actuated by misfiring form a cylinder
run the fault codes as well

Wheel vibrations at 75+ mph

Most computer controlled tire balancing machines which are in use today only balance tires to between 65/70 miles an hour. To get them balanced to a higher speed you might want to call a few auto performance shops and see if they balance tires to a higher speed. At higher speeds it takes very little in the way of an off balanced tire to really set up a vibration so shake.

Engine knocking/vibration

A few different things could be causing this, most are internal engine components. First off, take your tires and have them balanced to make sure you didn't accidently fling off a tire weight when you hit a pothole. Next, if that is not it, either you have a blown head gasket, cracked rings, or bad rod/main bearings.
