Question about 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

My 2003 2.7l Grand Cherokee doesn't like cold starts, especially running up hill. It seems not to want to rev above 2000 rpm and is very sluggish. Is it a problem?

The car is serviced regularily but is not keen on the uphill acceleration when cold, something that does not happen with my MB C class 2.2l. This car flies out the blocks no problem.

Check transmission fluid level and/or replace. Lower fluid level allows fluid to warm up sooner. (Check with qualified mechanic first)
Or it may just be one of those vehicles that takes longer to warm up.

SOURCE: 2000 grand cherokee overheating heater blowing out cold air

Generally this condition is the result of coolant loss, or failed thermostat. If coolant goes below cylinder head level, or thermostat remains closed, heat will stop working. Do not drive with this condition as excessive heat buildup in cylinder head can and will do serious damage to heads and or head gasket.
Find out where leak is and correct it. Change thermostat as it may also be damaged. Check for excessive steam from tailpipe or miss in engine, as these symptoms indicate a cylinder head problem.

SOURCE: 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee brakes make a hissing noise

has your brake pedal seem to be stiffer than usual? the sound you hear is from the brake booster if it has a leak it will cause a noise but you would have a stiffer pedal because the booster is loosing vacuum.

You could possibly have a bad EGR valve which would affect the vacuum which affects the idle. Check for a vacuum leak first then check the egr valve

Get your battery tested, if your battery has failed internally sometimes jump starting doesn't help as the battery is pulling all the current away from your starter.

Hi
Pop into to your local garage and have a diagnostic test carried out.
Listen to the advise given. It may save you lots of money, especially if you start the "guessing" game.
It does sound like a part may be blocked or failed though, but the sytem needs to be tested thoroughly first.
Good luck

Does the trany fluid smell burnt? Might want to have the trany flushed - torque converter too - and replace the filter in the trans. FYI you may know this but it is not recomended that overdrive be enabled when pulling a trailer - especially a heavily loaded one. Does your town have lots of hills - this is an added stain on the trany.

first pull your dipstick for the oil look to see if its murky or milky looking or if the oil level is higher than it should be if you dont see any of this start the car and walk to the tailpipe look to see if you have white smoke coming from it if you see 1 or all of these things then you may have a bad headgasket. if you dont see any of these things you may want to have your radiator pressure tested it sounds as if you have a developing problem with the radiator or the head hope this helps.

I'd begin by having the trans fluid changed and making sure there isn't an excessive amount of debris in the pan (there is always some but should not be obviously a lot) You may have a slight varnish buildup inside that becomes less sticky as the internal temp rises.
