Headlights and other lights are not connected to the engine system. If the dash lights go out and the engine stops there is a fault in the ignition system. A simple check is to remove any objects (keys, pencil tourches stc from the key as they swing with the vehicle they can and do turn the ignition off just a quick check before spending a lot of money

Thanks Bill for your comments. I understand what you are talking about but even with the one key on the key ring and the car still would not start. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

2003 ford windstar interior lights stay on when key is taken out of ignition but work properly when key is left in after turning off. What would cause this?

there is a dimmer switch to dim the dash lights. when you turn it all the way over it turns the interior lights on it is the same switch as your headlights.

1999 silverado gauge lights do not work

You probably already checked this but the simplest solution is the control used to turn on the interior lights and to dim your dash lights. It is a dimmer switch to the right of your headlight switch. If it is turned all the way down then you would have no dash lights and no headlight chime. Turned all the way up it turns on your interior lights. If this isn't your issue and if no fuses are blown then try to turn the dimmer switch all the way up with your headlights on. If the dash lights come on with the interior lights then your switch is fried and you may have a short in the interior light circuit.

2007 Raider the dashboard lights do not function when headlights are turned on . please advise what may be the problem

Check the switch. There should be a control on it that makes the lights brighter and dimmer. If you turn it all the way to high the interior dome light will come on. Turn ti till the dome light comes on then turn it back till that light goes off and you should be at max bright. If the dash lights still aren't working the problem is most likely the switch itself. Make sure you do the test with the doors closed and lights on.

it is more than likely a short in the headlight switch. also try the dimmer switch on the dash for the dash lights.
