Car will not start in park

Check your brakelights. There is a switch on the brakepedal lever which activates the starter solenoid. When this signal is missing the engine will not crank and/or the gearshift will not move from Park. You can tell if the signal is lost if the brakelights fail to work.

When I turn on the headlights, the brakelights won't work including the turn signals. when the headlights are off, the brakelights and turnsignals work. what could the problem be?

My first thought would be a bad ground connection in the harness for the rear lights.
You might want to take a test light and check the contacts in one of the sockets.

Volvo 850 - Headlights/Brakelights

Hi Metzgerism!

No tools are needed to do such replacements, as both head- and brake-lights are accessible by simply removing panels/caps that cover them. For the headights there are caps that can be twisted and removed, while for the brakelights you need to carefully pry open a panel on the rear post.

Good luck!
