Subaru brumby - cant get piston in caliper to retract fully. is there a special trick or they just ceased. any hints

The piston needs to be rotated clockwise while compressing it into the caliper. This is due to it being part of the E-brake system also

Struggling to depress pistons on rear brakes. Hoave used G-clamp, Made a special tool with nut and bolt. Still struggling.


The pistons in the caliper should retract without much effort. A "C" clamp is usually all you need to do it. I suspect you have a seized caliper or possibly a kinked or crushed brake line (preventing the brake fluid from returning to the master cylinder when the piston is depressed) feeding that caliper - but isn't very likely.

How to put rear brakes on


Remove the caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper. Replace brake pads as necessary. Special tool is required to retract caliper piston to fit over new pads. (see picture below)
Retract piston in caliper using special tool to rotate clockwise and make sure the notch in the piston is aligned properly so the tab on the inner pad will fit in properly.
Reinstall caliper assembly and caliper mounting bolts.

Cant make caliper return so I can replace pads on the rear


The piston has to spin clockwise while keeping light pressure to compress,having the bleeder open at the same time makes it easier.There should be slots or holes in the piston ,you may have to buy a socket to be able to turn the piston.

Can't retract brake piston, right rear wheel


u need a special tool becuase the e brake is in it and it turns clock wise or it is a ceased piston replace caliper would have to it but one of them .good luck or make sure if u open the brake line u bleed the system accordingly to manurfactsure.

How do you get the rear brake caliper piston to retract so you can change brake pads


It depends what type of Caliper Piston it is, if it has two grooves in it that criss cross like a X, those pistons have to be turned clockwise with a special tool or you can use a small screwdriver or I use the complete side of a small Vise grip that will fit inside the groove to turn the piston clockwise until it fully retracts into the caliper. The other type of Piston that has no special marks, you can use a C-Clamp and just put it on the Piston and tighten the clamp until the Piston fully retracts back into the caliper.

As your car has a handbrake fitted to the rear calipers,you will need a piston wind in tool to retract the piston fully back into the caliper as when you adjust your handbrake the piston automatically winds itself to the required position for usage without this tool you are getting nowhere,so get hold of a tool to do the job and you should not have problem unless the piston has totally siezed on the screw then you will have a problem being the only way to repair would to be a new or refurbished caliper.

How to Fully retract piston into caliper body using a "C" clamp


The rear brakes on the 2004 need to be compressed with a special tool available at any parts store. You need to "screw" the caliper piston in instead of pushing it in with the "C" clamp.

Notice the Two holes on the caliper piston face? They receive the pins of a special tool that turns and presses in at the same time to collapse the piston. You may be able to approximate the effect with a pair of needle nose pliers or such and turn & press in. The right tool works best.

If its the front brakes you are working on and the piston won't retract into the caliper then you need a new caliper, or both actually. Calipers need to be replaced in pairs. If you are working on the rear then you need a special tool to turn the piston back into the caliper. you can get the rear disc brake tool at any auto parts store. Turn the piston clockwise to retract it, and pay attention to the little spots cut out of the piston that the tool grabs to turn it. They need to be at the top and bottom of the piston once you fully retract it or the little pin at the bottom of the inside brake pad wont sit against the piston. And once again if it still wont retract then you need to replace both calipers. Once you are finished you need to pump up the brake pedal and then pull up the parking brake lever and release it 10 to 20 times to adjust the piston.
