SOURCE: Install a 05 Jeep Liberty 3.7 in a 02 Liberty

BEFORE you put the engine in you must convert it with your old engine's crankshaft position ring and it's pick-up sensor. This ring can ONLY be changed with the engine upside down and out of the car. All rods must be disconnected, all mains are part of a cast saddle that must be removed, the front engine covers and all the timing chains must be removed, and finally the crankshaft must be lifted out and the ring must be hammer-unscrewed (impact screw driver, but I forget now if the taper-headed screws are allen, hex, star or phillips). DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME REMOVING THE HEADS. The ring is ENTIRELY different than the one the computer system on the 02 Liberty can recognize (this is what triggers your spark timing). Next is the magnetic pick up 'wheel' located on the front of the passenger's side of the over-head camshaft. This magnetic cup wheel triggers the '02 fuel injection system (don't un-magnetize it). Lastly, the '02 plastic intake manifold (w/ O rings for seals) for the '02 has an additional port, this is an easy swap-out. Mostly there are no gaskets- the finish is so fine they just use a factory sealer (comes in a tube). Buy it, it's cheap enough and it matches the factory's specs. Taking the engine back out/in is NOT fun, but with the engine on a stand, and with no time constraints it's managable (but still not fun). I made that exact engine swap myself and went through a lot of anguish learning all of this. By-the-by, these engines will NOT tolerate dirty oil. DO NOT EVER try and stretch out your oil changes, because they run really hot (due to the windage tray that prevents oil mist from coating the engine's internals) an ash will form and goop up the insides. The fine oil pick-up screen (drilled plate) will always clog up. If it's been a long time since the last change and your engine is still running fine, when you get around to putting in new high detergent oil it sorta un-sludges the goop and REALLY coats the pick-up. DEATH BY SUFFICATION. If you're ever at this point (no damage yet) I would suggest doing the oil change (before there's any knocking or signs the engine is failing) and I would do 2 more oil & filter changes @500 miles each; hopfully you'll dislodge the ash/sludge and get it out of the engine. Once damage has started it progresses very quickly- this engine is not very tolerant. Your oil will be gold color, and yet your enging will sieze because it can't 'get to it'. BEST OF LUCK- this is very do-able, but you might first investigate if you can swap out the engine management computor and wire harness and maybe avoid all of this above mentioned wrenching. No back ground info here, plus I didn't have access to the vehicle the 05 engine was snatched out of- sorry, and good luck again. One last bit of advice- I bought a zero miles engine from a National Highway Admin. crash/test vehicle. When I broke the engine down ALL the timing marks on all three chains were not aligned and had to ALL be set- I guess they might do that to prevent the parts from re-entering the 'system'? Or, some dumb s__t at the factory was new and/or pi__ed-off and this engine was just plopped in the donated/untitled crash vehicle rather than ripping it back apart and re-assembling it. The damn Jeep fired on the second crank and is running fine now (2 years later). Ciao4Now, Brian Fahey

I want to change a 3.7 motor off of 2004 jeep Liberty 2wd in order to fit my 2002 jeep liberty 4wd?

engine swaps are complex as is mixing engines to wrong transmissions.
so both are 3.7L, is that it?
you never said what exacty didnt fit.
the flex plate to TC
or TC to A/T pump side mismatch.
????????
if its the flex then get the correct flex plate.
or call jeep parts? ask them for the right parts
the side of the trans has the trans part number
my guess is all you need is the correct flex plate for engine to TC.

Is there ANY other engine that will fit in a 2002 jeep liberty limited? 3.7L v6... need a whole new engine

3.7L EKG Powertec, engine. SOHC with roller followers,
did you check compression, or just P030x codes???????
and what if its just a stuck valve or collapsed lifter
why not ask for help in diagnosis?
compression bad? on one or more? cylinders, post #
pull the Valve covers, see if there are broken valve springs
or bad cam lobes, or lifter bad? (motion)
if it didnt burn oil , try rebuilt heads.?

ran for 12 years, so what is the mileage>? 300k?
Oil changes, at 5000 ?

the 3.7 may fit...says wiki.
warning, some engine blocks may NOT be same. (filter mounts, engine mounts) check first.
but you can find this at any engine builders web site. (google them)
ive swapped many and engine, even wrong engines.?grin
there are always choices, i always have and had spare cars.
so down time is never an issue for me.
but others yes. (rent a car is one option while fixing another)
1: if the block is bad get a short block.
2: if the heads are bad get yours rebuilt , or exchanged.
3: if you blew the engine to total destruction, pistons hit valves? (rare)
then get a used engine, or buy a rebuilt.
or pull yours and take it to any top machine shop and drop it off.
bingo, fixed and cheap too. no middle man, to rip you.

history.
The 3.7 liter PowerTech V-6 engine is, essentially, the 4.7 V-8 with two fewer cylinders.
then later, morphed to the Pentastar V6. (today's motor)
cast iron block, (lasts long time, easy to bore and rebuild)
no rubberband cam belts, real chain, drive.
2 valves per cyl. making head rebuilds fast and cheaper.
forged pistons, not cheap cast.
MOPAR is not POS.
ask engineer Brian Crothers

I run the 3.8L in my 08 JK.
its a real low tech, push rod motor. (ended in 2011)

id fix mine, if it failed
my guess is it is head failure, , so get the newer
rebuilds with pinned, valve guides and run it.

CALL A LOCAL PARTS HOUSE AND SEE IF LONG BLOCKS ARE THE SAME. IF THEY ARE, YOU CAN SWAP MANIFOLDS AND SUCH TO COMPLETE THE SWAP.

Have a 2005 liberty 3.7 trying to install into a 2002 liberty but motor will not bolt up to trans. due to somthing on end of crank hitting converter? fixable problem?

If the engine was for a manual, there will be a pilot shaft bushing there. Not sure if removing it will help or not,the crank maybe different,if this is a used engine, you may have to get the converter from the other vehicle,if it was a automatic also.

2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7L Engine Swap to newer 2004 engine

Has anyone made this work yet? I have the same problem 2002 jeep 3.7 and just installed a 04 motor. Timing is off. Some one had a good idea of mounting the crank gear to the out side of the harmonic ballancer and mounting the sensor with a bracket. What about the cam gear on the left side. Does the timing cahain have to come off to remove it? Or has any one swaped the wiring harnest, and computer.
Please email me back. pcardoso@cogeco.ca Thanks for your help.
