Question about 1995 Chevrolet C/K 2500

1 Answer

Fuel pressure problems. If I remove the fuel cap truck runs normal. I've replace just about everything. And still have problems with it.

Replaced fuel tank, gas lines, fuel pump, fuel filters. New transmission. Replaced engine sensors egr, coolant, map, tps, evap canister, check return air line. New manifold gasket. It's been in the shop numerous times and still not fix. Thinking it's something to do with TBI regulator or something.

The only thing you are doing by leaving the gas cap off is providing an extra vent to the tank.
If that really helps the problem I would take another look at the vapor canister system. There may be a line plugged or a valve not opening.
Normally that would set a code in the computer.

Spray the intake with carb cleaner to find the vacuum leak. Check where the EGR mounts and the throttle body gasket sense you had both off.

That eliminates the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. Have you checked the fuel injector itself for an open winding or stuck valve plunger? There should not be a steady 12 volts to the injector--if good injector, it would be spraying fuel steadily into the throttle body. But at least the engine should try to run if poorly. Take the injector out, dry it off with air, and intermittently apply 12 volts to one terminal while grounding the other. You should hear a click from inside every time you touch 12 volts. If not, replace it. If it does, it may be plugged with debris. Try blowing through it in reverse with compressed air.

If you replaced the injector after the plugsthey may be fuel fouled.Pull the plugs and clean them.(you can sandblast them,or use a method I used to use-shoot a little starting fluid on them and use a lighter to burn off the contamination of too much fuel).I can't believe GM kept using this stupid design so long-I remember nearly new Vortec V6s with this same problem in the '90s.

After traveling, there was high air pressure in the fuel tank? is it normal?

Are you sure is was high air pressure and not vacuum? Most modern automobiles have fuel tank purge systems which will place the fuel tank under low pressure (or vacuum). If you remove the fuel cap immediately after travelling a long distance or while the engine is still running, it could be normal to hear a "hissing" sound when removing the cap as the pressure in the tank will equalize when the cap is removed.

You will have to pinpoint what the engine is missing...
- Spark
- Fuel
- Compression

All three of these are tested when the engine is being cranked over. There are two way of checking for fuel. Fuel pressure and fuel trigger. Both are very important and must be present for the engine to start. Fuel pressure is self explanatory. You just hook up the gage and see what the reading is. Fuel trigger is check with a noid light. The injector gets unplugged and the noid light gets plugged in to the injector clip. With the engine cranking over, this light must blink. This is the signal to the injectors from the computer. You can have all the fuel pressure in the world, but it wont matter if the injector is not pulsing gas into the cylinder like it should.

Compression tester, spark tester, fuel pressure gage and noid light are all accessible at your local auto store. All three tests play a very important part in diagnosing a no start condition. Be extremely careful when doing these tests.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

1992 GMC K1500 Starts then dies

I saw what you replaced, didn't see any testing? Any applicable trouble codes? Use a gage and check proper fuel pressure, TBI--9--13 psi. As an example, 5 psi fuel pressure makes a nice looking injector spray pattern, but, 5 psi won't start and run a v8. My opinion.
Could be other issues.

This is almost certainly caused by a lack of fuel pressure . The fuel pressure will be fine while the engine is running but when it is switch off the pressure won't hold . In the trade we call this residual pressure . What happens when this fault occurs is that the fuel in the engine fuel rail will vaporize and hence the hard starting .

There are three possibilities : leaking injectors , a faulty pressure regulator valve or a faulty check valve in the fuel pump .

First thing to do is to check the fuel pressure while the engine is running and then switch the engine off , if the pressure drops drastically over a period of 20minutes then you will know you have poor residual fuel pressure . Note if you have not done this before seek help as this can be dangerous as you could set your car on fire .

Next , use fuel hose clamping pliers to pinch the fuel inlet hose ( having restarted engine and then stopped again ) . If the residual pressure drops you have a faulty check valve ( replace fuel pump ) . On the other hand if the residual fuel pressure stays remove the injectors and get them serviced . If the problem is still there replace the fuel regulator .

Note use an approved fuel pressure gauge - the fuel pressure is very high ( 250 - 500 kpa )

If the residual fuel pressure was ok do the same procedure on the fuel return line whilst
