The thermostat could be stuck closed. It also could be the cooling fan motor
is burnt out causing fuse to burn out.

SOURCE: car never reaches operating temperature (cold weather) thus little to no heat inside

change the thermostat, sounds like it could stuck open and wont allow the engine reach operating temp, also test the constant control relay module located to the right of the battery as your facing the front of the car, also test coolant temp switch it might be defective and producing a high voltage that would cause the fans to constantly operate no matter the temp. Hope this helps

Place car on a steep incline or raise front end up higher than the heater core. Now, add coolant to the radiator as needed, with engine warmed up. It sounds like the radiator is lower than the heater core causing an air lock and if that is the case this will allow the air bubbles to escape.

Over heating


If your vehical is over heating at idea it is most likely the radiator fan
this can be checked by running the car until it heats up and looking at the fan to see if it is running.
This usually isn't an issue as long as you are driving, but when you stop or driving slow or in traffic it will start heating up quickly. your fan keeps air flow going through the engine while at a stop to help cool down the engine compartment and pull.push air through the radiator

If you still over heat no matter if your driving or stopped it may be a thermostatic radiator valve that went bad. this is a release valve between the radiator and the engine that helps control the coolent flow between the engine and radiator and control how much heat is taken out of the engine to be cooled in the radiator.

So, run the car and see if the radiator fan kicks on. if it does, it's probably not a bad fan. if your car starts over heating and the fan never comes on it's most likely some problem with the fan

if it is turning and you are still having problems overheating go buy a new valve and change it out. cost you at most 5 bucks for a new one (probably less)

If you replaced the thermostat I would look next at the electric cooling fan thermostat.. Its likely located in the radiator itself and is in charge of turning on the electric fans.

To check. start the car and listen for the fan next to the radiator to kick on. It should start running before the car gets over heated.

Also when the temp gets really high is the radiator hot? if not then you still have a coolant flow problem. If the radiator IS hot then you have a problem with the coolant not getting cooled. Either an electric fan/thermostat of if you have an engine driven fan maybe its clutch is bad.

You did not BLEED the radiator and it's over heating.

Take off radiator cap when engine is COLD

Start engine

Let it idle until it's HOT

As it heats up you will notice air bubbles coming out of the radiator filler neck.

Let car run until you don't see any more bubbles

Fill radiator coolant to keep it topped up to the hot mark.

Put radiator cap back on once you hear the fans kick on.

Done

You should now have tons of heat

Check the fan activate sensor/switch seems to be not functioning well its allowing the fan to operate late.

98 v6 mustang is over heating its not the thermostate or fan


Several things ... best guess, in order:
1. (very likely) Radiator fan is not blowing (turn on car and a/conditioner.
When compressor kicks in, the radiator fan must blow). If it ims not blowing,
the radiator fan motor may be burned out ($40).
2. Check / replace "cooling fan" fuse ($1) and / or "cooling fan" relay switch
($7).
3. Radiator clog (possible)

It started overheating, there is water, and I do not think it is the thermostat. It seems like the fan is not going on at all.


if the fan is not going on then this is most definatley your problem. The water in the engine and radiator circulates around the inside of the engine block, drawing away heat and carrying it to the radiator, if the fan is not working to draw air across the radiator and dissapate the heat then you will overheat. Try checking the radiator fan fuses in the underhood fuse and relay box, if there all good check that the fans are indeed not coming on. they will start when the thermostat opens and close when it does. if no fan operation, check for power at the fan plug, if not change the fan assembly.

first thing to do is make sure yo have enough anti freeze in the radiator, once yo know yo have that you can drive the car.

secondly the problem could be a bad radiator fan motor which does not come on when it is supossed to, as long as the wind is blowing against the radiator it will not over heat so again check the radiatro fan motor and the fan relay.
