Ball joint on hilux surf gen 3 popped out

Two lower ball joints and nsf anti roll bar link fitted in march in nov nsf ball joint popped out faulty parts or fitting

Didn't it have a castellated nut and a cotter pin? If no cotter pin, maybe the nut worked itself back off, or wasn't tightened enough. Fit it back on to test fit: the ball stud should be smaller diameter at top and get larger towards bottom, so it pulls in tightly into the hole on the knuckle, which is also smaller diameter at its top end. Know what I am trying to say? As the ball joint stud goes into the knuckle, the more it goes in, the tighter it fits. When you get it in, it should be a very tight fit.

SOURCE: replace ball joints

Remove in this order: wheel, loosen the 4 lower ball joint set bolts, cotter pin and nut from tie rod, tie rod from ball joint bracket, ball joint from lower control arm, 4 lower ball joint set bolts, ball joint from suspension. Install is reverse but don't tighten the 4 lower ball joint set bolts.

torque is as follows:
ball joint to control arm- 112 ft-lbs
Tie rod nut- 67 ft-lbs
lower ball joint set bolts- 83 ft-lbs
remember to use a new cotter pin

I have a 2002 Tundra and there was a recall to replace these. I probably is still in effect. They replaced them and aligned the front end for free.

The ball joints are going to be hard to due if you due not have an arbor press in your garage. They are not the kind that you can replace by yourself unforuantely without a press to press them back into the control arm. If you know a good cheap mechanic this would be a good route becuase a shop is going to charge you an arm and a leg to press these ball joints back in for you.

Wandering is usually caused by toe-out. Did the aligner use front wheel drive specifications for this rear wheel drive truck? A front wheel drive toes in when the wheels are pulling the car, but the front wheels on your truck drag back to a toe-out position if steering parts are worn. Try pushing the fronts of the front wheels apart. They should still be at least a 16th of an inch closer in the front than in the rear of the tires.

CV joints are bad. Look for torn boots and grease.

You do not state which vehicle, so the initial response is the CV joints. however depending on vehicle, you may have a dry upper ball joint on the left check the boot seal and grease it if there is a zerk fitting. On the right side, look for burnished areas where the tire may be rubbing. Also make sure wheels are adequately tight as well. inspect ball joint boots for damage, especially the upper ball joint- any damaged or missing ball joint boots warrant replacement. Also check the other steering components for play- they should be tight with no play. But they should rotate freely.

If you hear thumping when you go over bumps chech the sway bar links up front. There will be awishbone shaped link that is attached tot he frame, and the ends are attached to the lower control arms. The links should be snug.

Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement Removal Procedure Tools Required J 43828 Ball Joint Separator
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the stabilizer shaft link. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
  4. Remove the wiring harness from the lower control arm.

  6. Remove the cotter pin (1) from the ball joint (3).
  7. Remove the nut (4) from the ball joint (3).

    Notice: Use only the recommended tools for separating the ball joint from the knuckle. Failure to use the recommended tools may cause damage to the ball joint and seal.
  9. Remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle using the J 43828 .

  11. Remove the lower control arm front (1) and rear (4) mounting bolts.
  12. Remove the lower control arm (1) from the vehicle and place in a vice.
  13. Drill out the 3 rivets (3) retaining the ball joint to the lower control arm (2).
  14. Use a 3 mm (1/8 in) drill bit in order to make a pilot hole through the rivets.
    Finish drilling the rivets with a 13 mm (½ in) drill bit.
  15. Remove the ball joint (4) from the control arm (2).
Installation Procedure

  1. Install the ball joint (4) into the control arm (2).
  2. Install the 3 ball joint bolts (3) and the nuts (1). Follow the instructions in the ball joint kit. Tighten the ball joint bolts (3) according to the specifications in the instructions.

  4. Install the lower control arm (2) to the front suspension support (1)
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
  6. Install the lower control arm front (5) and rear (4) mounting bolts.
  7. Tighten • Tighten the front bolt to 107 N·m (79 lb ft). • Tighten the rear bolt to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  8. Install the lower ball joint stud (3) to the steering knuckle (2).
  9. Install the ball joint stud (3) through the steering knuckle (2).
  10. Install the ball joint nut (4).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the ball joint nut to 55 N·m (41 lb ft) plus 180 degree rotation minimum-65 N·m (50 lb ft) plus 180 degree rotation maximum to install the cotter pin.
  12. Install the wiring harness to the lower control arm.
  13. Install the cotter pin (1).
  14. Install the stabilizer link to the lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
  15. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  16. Inspect the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications in Wheel Alignment.

Leaving the nut loose so that when it pops parts don't fly use a fork pry bar designed to "pop" ball joints. If this does not work soar overnight with penitration oil and have someone apply pressure while you heat the control arm where the ball joint sits. The expansion of the metal will help with removal but it must be heated faster than the heat soak into the joint or they will expand at the same rate.

Replace lower ball joints. How do you replace Lower ball jonits?


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle, allowing the front suspension to hang free.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. WARNING
    Be careful when working in the area of the CV-joint boot. Damage to the boot could result in eventual CV-joint failure. If necessary, install CV-joint boot protector tool J-34754 or equivalent, to protect the boot.
  3. On Eldorado and Seville with 4.6L engine, remove the road sensing suspension position sensor from the lower control arm.
  4. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the ball joint stud. Use ball joint separator tool J-36226 or equivalent, on Deville and Fleetwood or ball joint separator tool J-35315 or equivalent, on Eldorado and Seville, to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  5. On Deville and Fleetwood, loosen the stabilizer bar link nut.
    1. Drill out the 3 rivets retaining the ball joint to the lower control arm and remove the ball joint. NOTE: Recommended drill-bit is 1⁄2 inch (13 mm). Fig. 1: Drilling the rivets out of the lower control arm 91048g05.gif

      To install:
  6. Attach the new ball joint to the lower control arm with 3 mounting bolts and nuts.
    1. On Deville and Fleetwood, the bolts must be installed from the top of the control arm.
    2. On Eldorado and Seville, the bolts must be installed from the bottom of the control arm
    3. Tighten the nuts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
    4. On Catera, the bolts must be installed from the top of the control arm.
    5. Tighten the nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  7. On Deville and Fleetwood, tighten the stabilizer bar link nut to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  8. Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle and install the castellated nut.
  9. On Deville and Fleetwood, tighten the ball joint nut to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then tighten the nut an additional 120°, during which a tighten of 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) must be obtained.
  10. On Eldorado and Seville, tighten the ball joint nut to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then tighten the nut an additional 120°, during which a minimum torque of 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) must be obtained. If the minimum torque is not obtained, check for stripped threads. If the threads are okay, replace the ball joint and knuckle.
  11. On Catera, tighten the pinch bolt to 74 ft. lb. (100 Nm).
  12. Install a new cotter pin. If the cotter pin cannot be installed because the hole in the stud does not align with a nut castellation, tighten the nut up to an additional 60°to allow for installation. NEVER loosen the nut to provide for cotter pin installation.
  13. On Eldorado and Seville with 4.6L engine, install the road sensing suspension position sensor to the lower control arm.
  14. If necessary, remove the CV-joint boot protector tool.
  15. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle. Fig. 3: Separating the ball joint from the steering knuckle 84208016.gif

How to repair a lower ball joint on the passenger side

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove tire and wheel assembly, then install modified outer seal protector No. J34754, or equivalent, Fig.3 .
3. Remove lower ball joint cotter pin and nut, then loosen ball joint from steering knuckle using tool No. J-29330, or equivalent.
4. Position a suitable pry bar between suspension support and lower control arm and separate lower ball joint from steering knuckle. On some models, it may be necessary to remove nut attaching link to stabilizer shaft.
5. Locate center of rivet body and mark with a center punch.
6. Using a 1/8 inch drill, drill pilot holes completely through rivets. Using a 1/2 inch drill, drill final holes through rivets to ensure fitting of new ball joint.
7. Remove ball joint from lower control arm.
8. Assemble new ball joint to lower control arm with bolts provided in service package, Fig.9 . Tighten bolts to specifications.
9. Insert ball joint stud into steering knuckle and tighten nut to specifications, then install cotter pin.
10. Install wheel and tire and check front wheel alignment.

How to replace right front axle 2000 buick lesabre


Lift the passenger side of vehicle. Remove tire/wheel assembly. Remove the axle nut. Remove the tie rod end nut. Smack the side of the housing the tie rod end goes into to pop the tie rod end loose and out. Remove the sway bar link. Remove the lower ball joint nut. Smack the housing the lower ball joint goes into to pop the ball joint loose. Pry the lower control arm down to pop the ball joint out. swivel the rotor and strut assembly to the side. Pop the axle out. Reassemble in the reverse order.

I have a clunking noise which appears to be the lower ball joint on the drivers side. How do I go about replacing it?


Take wheel off, loosen crown *king nut with cotter pin*, use crow bar and hammer to to pop ball joint out, or use jack stand or another jack put on wheel hub and lower van. The weight of the vechile will pop it out for you. Use grinding wheel to remove rivits or whatever holds the ball joint on. Use punch to pop them out after head is removed, and you should be able to pop ball joint out. Install new joint and install rest of the components. Making sure to use a new cotter pin in crown nut.
