SOURCE: Charging Light On After Replacing Alternator/Battery1999Windstar

Hi, I can't tell you exactly what is wrong because there is too much involved at this point, what with 2 shops working with it, but I can give you some advise on what else to check. On the alternators and the wiring that supports them a small volt charge is taken off one of the slip rings, where the brushes ride, for the purpose of turning out the light. As I remember, this is a yellow wire that runs back to the dash.

To the alternator, it would be one of the wires that plug into the side of the alternator case.

My battery in my 1994 Safari Van keeps draining after being charged. What could be the cause of this? It's a brand new battery.

Either a shorting wire off a wiring loom somewhere in the electrics or a boot light or internal light not switching off.did you recently fit a new item to the vehicle as this could be part of the problem.

It sounds like your alternator is bad. East way to confirm, take it to local auto parts store (IE: Autozone, Advance, etc) and have them do a FREE charging system test. Couple of thoughts; you have two new batteries and your poor alternator has to work twice as hard. After you put new batteries in, you've been running on straight battery power. Alternator normally runs all your electronics and recharges battery(s) but if Alt has gone "south" then you're on straight battery power.

alternator fault, 12.6 should be min on fully charged battery 14.v min should be when the engine is running. when engine is turned off the battery should hang around 13.6 volts and drop steady to 12.6- 12.8 volts and stay there. faulty or damaged battery can damage the alternators regulator. or the bushes in the alternator. also check the earth from the alternator housing to the shell and battery and same with the positive wire from the alternator to the battery, battery should last 5 years but no more some don't even last 3 years, alternator that depends on how meany miles you do or not do as not meany miles the battery is always on charge and use from lights etc that put strain on the alternator. if you dont do meany miles put a larger battery on the vehicle, this will use less power to start the engine so the alternator can re charge on shorter journeys.

Battery keeps draining

if your battery died while driving and the car cut off while your driving,, your problem is from your alternator!!!,, on a normal working car, you can start, remove ther battery terminals and the car would still run cause the alternator will be powering the car. In your case the alternator isnt working and the car was working on battery power therefore when the battery went dead the car cut off.. Your alternator need \s to be charging between 13.5 and 14.2 volts.. as little as 10 volts will keep the vehicle running.. I'd suggest you have the alternator replaced.

The abs light came on and air conditioner started blowing hot. After work the batt was dead. Jumped it and guages were dead for about 30 sec. About 10 miles later abs light went off and air got cold again....

It sounds like the engine is running on battery power only. The engine of today`s technology needs the alternator to have enough ignition to run on,lights and computer, etc, will be affected by low voltage, and amps. The alternator is not charging, look for a charging fuse to see if it is blown. If the fuse is fine, replace the alternator, and have the battery recharged on a slow 2 amp charge so it will recover it`s loss of deep cycle amps. This will prolong battery life and alternator. If I can help let me know.Let me know the out come.

Replaced loose battery terminal and alternator light is now on

If an alternator overcharges, it will most probably spit out electrolyte from the filler caps or vents when run for a time. It may also become quite hot to touch.
Providing the engine is starting OK, and the charge warning light on the panel is not alight or flashing on and off, what you need to do is have a voltage check done on the battery with the engine running. If the alternator is OK, the voltage should be in the vicinity of 13.5- 14.0 volts (13.8 is the accepted "standard").
Any higher, it could indeed be overcharging.
Turning on the headlights should not materially change this voltage.
If the voltage is only around 12V or even less, turn on the headlights, and observe it again.
A low voltage can mean the alternator is not charging.
