How do I remove the battery tray in a 1998 Mercury Tracer?

I need to know how to remove the plastic tray underneath the battery in a 1998 Mercury Tracer wagon. I already removed the two 10mm bolts that appear to hold it in, but after removing them the tray still doesn't budge. What am I missing?

SOURCE: rear brake drum removal 1992 mercury tracer

Yes. and than the drum will come off. You will find that it will not move at first so take a hammer and tap, not slam, around the edge of the drum to brake the rust. It you have difficulty removing the 2 screws don't strip the heads. Take your screw driver and put it in the slot than tip it at an angle and hit the end with a hammer to apply force sideways to the screw. This will, in most cases, brake the rust and permit the screw to turn.

SOURCE: how do i remove rear brake caliper on a 2002

Nothing. On the front disk there are only two bolts that hold the caliper in place. Once they are all the way out it is just a matter of wiggling and pressure to remove the caliper. The rear calipers are also held on with 2 bolts but because of the way the brake line attaches you also have to remove that to remove the caliper.

Removal & Installation

Before continuing with this procedure, make sure to have available a new steering wheel retaining bolt and two lock cylinder retaining bolts. Once removed, these parts lose their torque holding ability (or retention capability) and must not be reused.

  1. If equipped, disarm the air bag system and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the combination switch.
  4. Unplug the wiring connector to the ignition switch.
  5. Remove the ignition and shifter interlock cable mounting bracket bolt and position the assembly to one side.
  6. Remove the four steering column bracket bolts and lower the steering column.
  7. Cut a groove in the ignition cylinder bracket bolts with a chisel and hammer or use a similar method.
  8. Using a screwdriver, remove and discard the bracket bolts.
  9. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder and bracket.

Use a chisel and hammer to cut a groove in the ignition cylinder bracket bolts-1991-96 models shown; 1997-99 models similar

To install:

  1. Install the new ignition switch and the bracket into position on the steering column tube.
  2. Install the new lock cylinder bolts and tighten the bolts enough to hold the switch in position.
  3. Check for proper switch operation by rotating the key to each position. If necessary, reposition the lock cylinder until it operates properly.
  4. If positioned properly, tighten the retaining bolts until the bolt head shears off.
  5. Raise and position the steering column. Tighten the bracket bolts to 80-124 inch lbs. (9-14 Nm).
  6. If equipped with tilt column, remove the upper mounting bracket retaining pin.
  7. Position the interlock cable bracket. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to 35-53 inch lbs. (4-6 Nm).
  8. Attach the wiring connector to the ignition switch.
  9. Install the combination switch.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Confirm operational status of the air bag system by turning the ignition key to the RUN position and visually monitoring the air bag indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. The indicator lamp should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds and then turn OFF. If the indicator lamp does not illuminate, stays ON, or flashes at any time, a fault has been detected by the air bag diagnostic monitor.
  12. Check the steering wheel, horn and combination switch functions for proper operation.

1998 Mercury Tracer Axle Removal

A lot of people try to pry these out, but that\'s generally not a good idea. They are secured with a bullring, which is the same outside diameter as the shaft, but fits very loosely in a groove in the shaft. The best way I\'ve found to get these out is to shake it out. Alternately yanking hard on the axle and pushing back in just as hard, in a rapid action, should shake it loose in just a few seconds.

you better KNOW its bad... before you replace it, because its a big job, and they wont take it back after you installed it. the gas tank will have to be removed. after you have verified that the pump has power and ground, and it still does not operate THEN it will need replacement.

My 1998 Tracer is stuck in park. When I push on the brake, the button on the shifter will not push in.

Hello! It sounds as if your gear shift lock isn't working properly - it should release when you depress the brake pedal. You're not stuck, however. There is a small plastic piece to the side of the gear shift on the console - you can pry this piece up and off, revealing a hole underneath. Insert a screwdriver straight down and you will push on the manual gear shift release button - once you do that you will be able to move the gear shift. This can be caused by a few things - weak battery, or the release button is broken behind the brake pedal.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Need to know where the blower motor is located

It is behind (and underneath) the front passenger side glove box compartment. If you lay on the floor you will see a circular shaped black plastic compartment, This is the blower fan and motor.
