Question about Cars & Trucks

2000 Town and Country will not go into reverse, all drive gears work fine, I am assuming the transmission is going out but I am not sure. Is there a fix or should I start looking to replace/rebuild the transmission?

I wouldn\'t be thinking the tranny is going. I would be looking to see if a switch is not being made or the linkage is worn. I would put it up on some ramps and look at the moving parts when shifting. Engine OFF. Brake ON.
Usually, reverse is all you would have left when a transmission did go. At least that was what use to happen back in the day. Maybe someone else has more info for you but I thought I could start you out.... good luck.

You see the solutio below with the diagram by Dave Real? That could very well be the problem.
But if all else fails, get a can of SEA-FOAM t-r-a-n-s-m-i-s-s-i-o-n treatment to add to it and keep shifting it with the engine running and your foot on the brake, then if you can, drive it and try to shift into reverse wherever possible. This stuff works GREAT! don-ohio (:^)

There isn't a modulator on this trans as it is electronic

You can have first gear going forwrd but no reverse. It is possible. The low/ reverse clutch isn't needed to go forward.

What would cause my 1999 town & country not to move in any gear

Make sure that your axles aren't broken. If you have a broken axle the power would transfer to the wheel with the least amount of resistance (to the broken axle) therefore not propelling the vehicle. Also look at your fluid level and condition. It is possible that the transmission is slipping in which case you'd need a transmission/rebuild.

Trans goes in drive for a minute then slips out reverse out if you shut off and restart drive works again then slips out low gear runs fine just cant go over 30

You may wanna try replacing the soleniod pack mounted on the front of the transmission.U may have to purchase it at a local dealer or napa.If that does not repair your issue you may have to install a used transmission.

On a 2001 Chrysler town and country the transmission will go in park, neutral, reverse and will drive in either drive, 3d or 1st gear. The problem is that it won't shift from 1st gear to second or third...

sounds like you are looking at a rebuild. chrysler transmissions need to be adjusted periodically by a qualified tech. if they aren't adjusted properly the results can be catastrophic.

Transmission still shifts erractically

well if you have a lot of millage it could only be the gearpump in the transy thats finished, unfotuntly ...you cant really change -it without rebuilding the all transy
other than that you still can drive-it but try letting the gear go on by it self ,you could damage your van by doing that !! you mignt not have choice but if you do ...try not doing-it!

What type of transmission fluid for town & country ?

Transmission fluid type ATF+4.

The filter is located on the bottom of the transmission, inside the oil pan.

Transmission

This is not uncommon, chrysler spec say that it may take up to 5 seconds to engage when cold. Make sure your flid is topped up to the proper level and I recommend a trans tune every 50,000 kms. Also, your dealer can do a quick learn, which resets all the factory values(recommended after every trans related repair).

Shifts into gear roughly

the pin in the differential inside the trans probably came out. you need a new transmission since this usually causes major case damage.
