SOURCE: exhaust fume check light

Is the car juddery when you start?  The same light came on mine with power loss issues at higher revs and it was really juddery- it was the coil pack.  Was replaced at the garage (don't take it to the main dealer they WILL rip you off) in half an hour.

What is it when gas fumes comes through the vents

You probably have an exhaust leak up by the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter that is releasing fumes to the engine compartment which makes it's way into your "fresh air" intake for your climate control.

Find that leak for your own safety

I HAVE A 1995 CHEVROLET CAPRICE CLASSIC, UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE OF CAR IT SMELL OF GAS FUMES.

Gasoline or exhaust fumes? If exhaust, you have a leak. If gasoline smell, tank may be over full and vent may be clogged.

Please I ask if any of this has helped you in your repairs to please rate my answers accordingly thank you for helping me to help others.

I will take a simple guess at this
you either one have a gas leak and it is fumes is coming in through your cowl vents below the windshield near the wipers and or you have a exhaust leak and is doing the same thing fumes entering the same it increases more when your sitting still because as you drive rather then it all getting sucked into the vents it is being blown across the windshield and roof and out the back.

I smell exhaust fumes in the cabin. What could be causing this?

The most common cause is an exhaust leak in the engine compartment near the engine. The exhaust fumes are pulled into the passenger compartment thru the heater vents. Switching to Rec might cut off the intake of air from outside.

Exhaust smell coming in from vent

In most cases fumes coming into the cabin thru the vents is from a leak near the engine. If the exhaust is leaking around the engine it should be fairly loud.

Why exhaust fume come in car

Could be a leaking gasket where the pipe or manifold connects to the engine. The fumes would come in thru the vents.
