SOURCE: engine light flashing

It sounds like you have a misfire. Anytime a misfire is detected by the powertrain control module (PCM) it flashes the check engine light (CEL) on and off. Do not drive it this way because it won't take long to damage the catalytic converter. Have the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) read with a scan tool or "code reader" to see what DTC or DTCs are set. If it's a 4 cylinder, it will have a P0301 set for a cylinder # 1 misfire, a P0302 for a cyl # 2 misfire & so on. If the misfire is random (ocurring in multiple cylinders intermittently) it will have a P0300 set. Once you know which cylinder is misfiring you can check that cyl to see what the cause might be. It could be an ignition coil or spark plug failure. The # 1 cyl is always the one closest to the front of the eng or this car, the one closest to the passenger side fender.

SOURCE: car is jerking engine light is flashing and smell gas

With modern cars it is bad when the engine light just comes on and the vehicle does something very different. It should not be driven. If the car is smelling of fuel and jerking it is because it's miss-firing (i.e. one or more cylinder is not getting spark but is getting fuel). This can be anything from electrical/electronic to mechanical like a broken rotor cap (as an example). The good thing, is that the light is coming on and a mechanic can check the ECU for error codes. Alternatively, you can buy or barrow one your self and check it out on your own (I think even certain auto-part stores will check it for you as long as you get in the zone;). 1996 is a good year for that since that is when OBDII started and all vehicles started using the same port to check for issues.

I have a 2003 Pontiac sunfire and today while driving the check engine light started flashing and the trac off light came on. the car has a burning smell to it .got home and touched converter with paper...

with the check engine light flashing you have a code set in the pcm that you need to have checked out as the light will only flash if there is a problem that can cause damage to the motor, like a convertor problem or overfuelling problem.if the light came on and not flash there is a code but not a possible engine damaging problem.that is the difference.either way you need to have it checked at a shop by a tech.the trac off light will come on some cars if a certain code is set in the pcm to get the driver to have things checked out that could cause damage, its just the way the manufacture has set things up.this does not mean there isn`t a possible problem with the traction control system.

Transmission not shiftin

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

My check engine light and trac off light are on and the engine sounds like it's in a stain at high speed

This is a transmission problem. Both your Traction Control and Engine light are on because of an issue with your transmission.

I would take it to an authorized transmission repair shop immediately. Avoid driving it there. I suggest a tow.

Sorry to hear about your issue and I hope everything gets resolved quickly.

I was driving my car today the engine started to rev but the car would not accerlate. Later the engine light , trac light and vsc lights came on.

Sounds as though the transmission is slipping badly and caused the faults described.Check the transmission fluid level while the engine is running in park and the brake applied. Also check the color and smell of the fluid. It should be red and clear but dulls and turns brown as it gets dirty,if it is dark and smells burnt you have a serious problem.Probably only a rebuild or replacement trans will be your options if it is the latter. If you must continue to drive the car try to avoid over revving it to make it go faster as this will just burn out the trans quicker.Depends on the model it could be something else but rarely so.I hope this is of some help to you.

Where do you check the transmission fluid?

PERFORM AN ELIMINATION OF ENGINE FLIUD CONTAINERS TO ACQUIRE THE TRANSMISION CHAMBER

The vehicle should only have an engine oil compartment, radiation compartment for antifreeze/ water, power steering fliuds, a water wiper blade spray dispenser compartment, and finally the transmittion fliud container area all situted within the engine entrapment area. Usually, opening the engine for the first time would require observing the fliud compartments that are identifyable from the remaining engine chambers. Observing closely on the fliud container should have written descriptions of what is expected within compartment. For example, the water fliud containers for wiper blades would usually have written lables as wiper blade fliud container, radiantion container would usually have the antifreeze demarkation logos visibly observable when engine is opened. Rely by elimination methods to ascertain the transmission fliud compartment. For example, once antifreze container, wiper water container, engine oild container, power steering fliud containers have been identified, the most like only remaining in the engine would be the transmition fliud compartment. Alternately, every fliud container within the vehicle engine is situated at separate areas. For example, the only fliud container closest to the transmittion chamber is the engine oil compartment. The vehicles usually require more engine oil than transmission fliud. Between both fliud containers, the smallest chamber for fliud oil is usually for transmission perposes in the absence of hydraulic fliud compartments with newer vehicles.

I get various lights on: transmission, ABS and

More like computer.. you will need to isolate the problem with one code at a time... sometime two codes are fixed, try this:
1. Check the rotor and break pad thickness, that normally will fix abs, brake or abs and tracs.
2. check engine could be as simple as an O2 sensor or fuel filter, coil pack, starter... each needs to be check'd.
3. check engine should identify condition codes.. go to princess auto and pick up the comptuer untit for 60$.
4. If it ain't burning oil.. heck have fun with it.
Have fun..

My 99' volvo v70 continually flashes the traction control and abs warning light and the speedometer stops working the trip meter and the odometer go blank than all of a sudden it will start working again...

Sounds like a bad ABS control module is at least part of your problem. The symptoms are usually and ABS and TRACS light intermittent or constand and eventually your speedometer works intermittently or totally quits. This guy rebuilds/upgrades them for about $140. New ones run over $800. http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/Volvo_Parts/Volvo_ABS_removal.htm
