Charging lights work on the principle of a balanced current throughn the bulb. no charge and the current flows from the battery through the bulb to the alternator. conversly when the alternator is charging at 13.5 volts or better the current is flowing back through the bulb. this opposing current puts out the bulb 12 volt batteries arte in fact 13 volts and alternators charge at 13.8 to 15 volts the 2 odd volts difference is not enough to make the bulb light up. Knowing this it means that some where you have an open circuit that is allowing I suspect battery voltage to make the bulb work. So I would be checking the wiring at the back of the alternator especially the continuinty of the 2 small wires in the connector as I suspect one may be broken in the platsic covering at the fitting The heavier lead is the one that carries the charge directly to the battery

SOURCE: nissan terrano 1996 td27 charging issue.

Did you hear the one about the Terrano with a charging problem?
Just fix it by replacing the thermostat!
Seriously - check your temperature gauge does it take ages for the needle to barely get off cold? (and is the heater useless?)
The needle should get to just below half way in 2 or 3 minutes.
If the thermostat is stuck open, then the engine does not get up to temperature.
The glow plug control senses the engine temperature is cold, so the glow plugs stay on for an extended period of time (sometimes 10 to 15 minutes) - short trips particularly in winter, with more headlight driving - the alternator can't keep up with the current being drawn off and from time to time you will end up with a flat battery!
A thermostat is cheap, and easy to replace (three bolts and about a half litre of coolant - I pumped the coolant from the top of the radiator, and didn't spill a drop when the thermostat housing was removed).
Sure enough, as the engine temperature reached about 50C, the glow plugs turned off.

SOURCE: Saab 93 1.9 tid warning

The easiest way to check is with the car running, disconnect the positve side of the battery, if the car dies, then it is the altenator, if the car keeps running then it is the battery. If you have a volt ohm meter, check the chrge going to the battery you should get between 12 and 14 volts if it is lower than 12 you have an altenator issue. the altenator should always produce enough to charge the battery and run the car at the same time, if not then the battery wears down.

2007 rav 4.Battery light came on, drove 20 miles on hwy. stopped, shut car off.started car with a very slow crank. Power steering was gone, all warning lights came on barely made it home. now dead.

Used your battery up just getting home. Now recharge the battery, and test the charging system- could be a bad alternator not charging the battery.

Normally, the alternator powers all the car's electrical needs when the engine is running. If the alternator fails, the battery will then be used to run the electrical needs until the battery is depleted, then the car will shut down. Dead, just like yours. No big deal, just find out why the charging system stopped.

How do I connect a warning/ignition light to my alternator?

Hi Glen
All depends what you mean by warning lamp.
Early Alternators used to have a terminal connected to the "Star" winding inside. A 12v lamp connected between here and ground will light up when a charge is available.
But.... the simplest method is to buy LED charge lamp which checked for voltages above 12v (12.5 to 14v} and lights up showing a charge. I can buy a simple device like this from my local Jaycar Electronics store. You should be able to get a similar device depending on where you are

Good Luck
You searched for alternator test

2007 jeep compass battery light

The light is supposed to mean the battery is not being charged by the alternator.
It's possible the alternator is failing when it gets hot, so testing it in a shop may not show any problems.
I would suggest checking output when the warning light is on if possible.

1993 chevy caprice 5.7L not charging (some times)

You said some of the warning lights come on. Then you can get a free scan at Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys. If this is a 2004-2008 Ford truck, there were some issues with the charging circuit cutting out due to a low battery charge.

It sounds like the Ignition switch is cutting out. You can get full chassis wiring diagrams and fusebox layouts at after registering with the site for FREE. Look at your diagrams and pay attention to the Relays that are activated by the keyswitch.

The RPM increase is normal when the Alternator is completely free-wheeling. There can be a hotwire to the Alternator brushes which runs from the keyswitch to the Alternator. If this is cutting out, the Alternator can not charge.

Look at how the Temperature gauge receives its power. It is a clue to which Relay is bad or ground wire is loose. Especially if you still have a working fuel gauge.

The loading up with a discharging Battery is normal. Consider that all the electric controls work directly and proportionately off of the 13-14 Volt range when charging. Your fuel mix, timing, are all related to the Voltage feedback and what starts low, stays low corrupting those settings.

The diagrams will give you a better tool to work with if you cannot drive for a scan. Just view the chassis voltage as the Target. If you drop below the battery voltage when you test the chassis voltage there has to be a reason.

Battery warning light came on, but the battery is testing fine.

Battery light usually comes on when voltage is low... usually related to alternator and not the battery itself... Did you take the battery out and have them test it at an autoparts store?

I'ld start by checking the voltage of the charging system with the car running. should be 13.8 or so.
