1996 Chevy Cavalier blown head gasket

Approximately how much would it cost to repair a head gasket on a 1996 Chevy Cavalier with a 2.2 engine? What about a thermostat?

I have been having trouble with my car overheating and have had to occasionally add in more coolant (I top it off every couple of months), although a test on it last week showed that their were no leaks present. They didnt think it was the water pump from their tests and suggested that it might be either the head gasket or the thermostat. Are there any other things I might need to consider as the problem and what are the approximate costs to fix them? I am just wondering how much more money to put into my car and I also want to be prepared and somewhat knowledgable when discussing my options with the mechanic. Thanks!

I have no idea what to do. We've replaced the thermostat and it seemed like that worked but then a couple days later it started doing the same thing. My husband is to stubborn to take it to a mechanic so I'm just at a loss. What are the things I should have him check?

I finally decided to pay them the money to check it out and after pumping $100 in it to get it looked at, it ended up being the head gasket. It was the Chevy dealer's that actually determined this and told me it would cost about $1200 to fix. Needless to say, I decided to ditch the car, it was on its last leg anyways, but I still miss it :(

Pull the spark plugs out and see if they have a brown tint to them and smell funny. You can tell a lot by the spark plugs. That could tell you if you're getting anti freeze in your cylinders. These engines are bad about head gaskets and cracked heads. To replace the head gasket you're probably looking at about 480.00 labor and about 200.00 in parts and machine work, unless the head is cracked, then you're looking at more money.

I have a 2000 2.2 chevy cavalier that i buy today and it have oil in the reservoir bottle what can it be plz help

If it has oil in the coolant resivoir bottle it has most likely got a blown head gasket or a cracked head/block. It will require diagnosing and repair which will be expensive. I hope you got it cheap. Fitting a second hand engine may be a good option as you dont know how hot this one may have gotten.

I have a 96 Chevy Cav. Looks like I have a fairly significant oil leak on the front side of the engine (belt side). It's losing approximately 1/2 quart of oil every 250-300 miles or so. It looks like it's...

Sounds like the front seal is out. You may have to take the engine out of the car to fix it. It requires removing the harmonic balancer to get to the seal.

For 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L SFI OHV 4cyl the check the next Head Bolt Torque sequence...

------------ front | 8 4 1 5 9 | of | | engine | 7 3 2 6 10 | ------------

Step 1: torque long bolts 8,4,1,5, & 9 to 46 Ft/Lbs torque short bolts 7,3,2,6, & 10 to 43 Ft/Lbs
Step 2: torque all bolts an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence

*** CAUTION *** engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) that permanently stretch during the initial installation. New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.

Hope helps (remnember rated this).

Head gaskets

There is really no difference between a blown or cracked head gasket. In either case the gasket would have to be replaced. Generally the term "cracked" is used when referring specifically to the cylinder head/s its/them selves. If the cylinder head is cracked it is a much more expensive repair.

Did you overheat the engine? Is the engine oil milky? Most likely you have a blown head gasket. Especially if you answered yes to any of the two questions above.
