My toyota sequioa will not start when the weather outside is cold..... later it 'll start when outside is warmer.

I would get your battery load tested. Most auto part stores will do it for free.

Purchased new battery, had alternator checked, and it will only start if jumped of every time. Thank you for your time.

If you connections are good at the battery and the starter, you probably need a new starter-it is drawing more cranking amps than your new battery can provide, but the jump is putting it 'over the top' with more push (amps)-if it is very cold where you are, consider removing the battery and putting it inside to warm it up-but, you might have gotten a battery that does not have the minimum cold cranking amps (CCA) required for your vehicle.

Hello jayr2870, the first part of your problem, ( the vehicle wouldn't start, but then, you could jump start it, so, you changed the battery and it started fine for about a week.
I changed my battery and did what a lot of people do, I wanted the cheapest battery I could find, so, I went in to wal mart and got one off the shelf. Life was good for a week or so, and then my vehicle started doing exactly what yours was doing. I found out later that my vehicle required a minimum of 750 cold cranking amps, but the battery that I bought only had 650 cold cranking amps.

I don't know if this will help you at all, I was just hoping to do my part to make it common knowledge that, " cold cranking amps DO matter ".

diesel engine have small starter helpers called glow plugs that heat the combustion air so that it can self ignite the diesel fuel
reasons for hard starting are
slow cranking speed---battery not charged enough or not big enough to do the job
injectors squirting and nit atomizing--- take the car to an accredited diesel pump/ injector repair shop for tip replacement and adjustment
the check engine light could be from faulty glow plugs
keep the fuel tank full ,especially in cold climate as there is hot return fuel from the injectors that causes condensation in the tank--water -- and that promotes the growth of a fungus which damages the pump and injectors
use diesel fuel condition on a regular basis to prevent that condition or keep the tank more that 3/4 full to stop condensation occuring

How many cold cranking amps should I have for my 2001 SL1 Saturn

A 550 CCA Battery would be ok. Your recommended Battery is 525 CCA. The extra 25 Amps would be ok and also give you that little extra bit on those colder days up there. Thanks for Using FixYa!

Sincerely,

JC
