I charge 1.2 hours labor ($50-80/hour) to change the pads and rotors. Decent pads are about $40.

Brake rotors getting red hot

Simple:(unless you are racing autocross), the brake pads are not releasing. This can be caused by several posible causes:

Clogged or?fices inside the Master Brake Cylinder.
Malfunctioning brake booster
Sticking brake calipers.
Damaged brake hoses.

A complete brake inspection is necessary, but anyway, overheated disc brake rotors that got red-hot will most probably got twisted or damaged and will be in need of replacement.

In my Stratus (a 2002 turbocharged R/T Sedan) I installed Premium ATE Brand rotors which have an elliptical slot. These Premium discs are needed at my altitude of more tan 7350 ft above sea level because engine vacuum is barely adequate to stop the car, and by using those rorots together with ceramic brake pads from Centris Parts (Posi-Quiet Brand) I achieved much better braking power. New brakes on a 2007 dodge charge, approximate cost?

your looking at about 30 dollars a rotor and 84$usd for brake pads. If anything else is bad then it will cost more. But that is the price so total it would be about 210 in parts and about 100-200 in labor depending on where you go. THanks, Midwest-tek

Replacing front brake pads on 2005 Dodge Stratus

jack up the car take the wheels off the caliper which holds the pads need to come off usally 2 bolts if you are replacing the rotors you may have to hit them with a hammer to break the free if they have little clips on the rotors you can grabb the clips with pliers and take them off you do not need to replace them make sure you push the pistons on the calipers back in clean and lube the pins and the any where the rest on the knuckle do get lube on the rotors put it all back together do the same on the otherside before you start the car pump the brakes until a good pedal then you are good to go i hope this helps you

The piston from the caliber will keep the inner and outer pads close to the rotor. If outer pads is loose, need to reassemble to find out if it didn't get installed right.

I have a 98 dodge stratus, are the rear breaks rotors or disc?

You do not require a mechanic to do this job. lst remove any wheel front or back. You probably have front disk and drum on the back.
To remove the rotor, you will see two bolts holding brake capalier on the rotor. Remove these and pry the capalier from the rotor. Now you need to remove the pads. Simple to remove, but when replacing you need a 6 inch c clamp to force the pressure mechanism back into the rotor in order to replace the pads. Remove the rotors and have them researfaced any any machine shop. Cost around $10 per rotor. Pick you up some antisizing compound and high temp grease. Follow instructions on the label. Now remove a back wheel, if you do not see a rotor then its a drum. To remove a drum you will need a several tools to replace the drums. Purchase these at Harbor Freight or Sears. Much cheaper at Harbor freight. Now remove the other wheel and repair one wheel at a time, by checking back wsith the wheel that has not been disambled. Before replacing have the drums reserfaced. Now once the job is completed you need to tighten up the wheel by using the special tool which you purchased. Tighten a little at a time AND ONCE THE WHEEL becomes hard to turn back off a turn. Do the same thing to the other wheel. May take you all day to do the job. But it's the way I learned to do a brake job. Hope this is helpful.
