You should take the belt off and examine it. If that is what was starting to burn, you will have to replace it. And now check all the pulleys to see if one of them has siezed up. Spin every one around by hand, feel for roughness or stiffness, or if it wobbles. If you find one that is siezed, replace it. That is where all the squalling started.

You sure have to check that. It occured to me, too, but I hople not. When the a/c is off, the pulley should be free wheeling.

When i turn the wheel my car makes a loud noise and smokes, it smells like burnt rubber, is it safe to drive it

Sounds like the power steering pump is locking up and the belt is slipping. Get it checked out before you drive it.

Loud noise burning smell

Most likely a belt problem or a worn out tensioner. You left off the year, make, model and engine so it's a guessing gamet. Read this post on how to track down the source of noise

I have a loud squall coming from under hood when in park n start up only happens every now in then last about a min or so 2002 Monte Carlo 3.8 ss

It sounds to me like you have a slipping rubber drive belt. Check the tensions of these belts, and replace if the rubber has become stiff or if the belt appears to be worn.
When replacing the belt, be sure to check the free rolling of all tensioners and bearings on it's pulleys. Tight pulleys, and failed bearings will also cause this belt to slip.

I replaced the altenator and the serpentine belt two weeks ago. Now i hear a squeaking noise. I tried a spray for the belt but the noise is still there.

Check your tensioner pulley -- if you do not have enough tension on the serpentine belt, it will slip on the pulleys and cause a squeaking noise (very loud and high pitched). if you push on the serpentine belt with your hand, it should not more more than about an inch -- if it does, you are low on tension. If it does not have any give at all, then you have too much tension, and one of your pulleys might not be turning properly, causing that same noise. If your tension is right, and your car is still making that noise ... and belt dressings (the spray you probably used) are not working to stop it, then it might be a piece of rubber stuck on one of the pulleys, but this usually will not make that sound ... just smoke and a burned rubber smell.

I have a 2000 nissan xterra and everytime i have the defrost on after about 30 seconds i smell this burning rubber burning wire kind of smell. when the heat is on any other setting the smell is not there....

when defrost is selected a/c clutch is engaged and system automatically draws fresh air instead of cabin air.i woud strongly suspect compressor belt too loose and slipping or compressor seized and slipping belt.very easy to confirm visually.ever any squealing noise associated with odor?

When heat is turned on car engine fails ... burning rubber smell and grinding/rubbing noise in the engine

a/c compressor may be seized. A/c compressor kicks on when in defrost, a/c, floor/defrost modes any time temperature is above 40 degrees F. That will burn the sepenine belt and stall the engine.
Try turing heat on floor mode only & see if ok.
