SOURCE: how do you take fan off to get to water pump

A special fan tool is required to remove the fan from the water pump. Yes it does unscrew. One part of the tool holds the bolts of the pulley while the other part unscrews the large nut on the water pump. Tool rental is available at some auto parts stores.

Disconnect battery, remove bolts holding fan shroud, at the water pump where the fan shaft attaches. Unscrew the nut. It will remove the fan from water pump, lift out fan and shroud, 4 bolts holding clutch to fan.

How do you change the fan clutch in a 325i?

You need to buy or make a tool to hold the pully from turning while you unscrew the fan from the water pump.
I went to the hardware store and bought a strap of steel about 1 1/2" wide and 36" long and about 1/8" thick. I drilled two holes in it sized to just fit over the heads of the 10mm bolts that hold on the pulley. I ground a half-moon dent in the edge to fit around the shaft. Note that the bolts in the pulley are arranged in a rectangle rather than a square. You want to fit across the bolt heads on the long side of the rectangle. You will need to bend a couple of mild curves in the tool to fit around radiator hoses etc.
Then use a narrow jaw wrench to grip the big hex to unscrew the fan from the water pump. Important! It is left-handed thread. I bought a very narrow adjustable wrench just for this task.
I think you will need to at least loosen the fan shroud to get the fan to wiggle out, but I don't recall for sure.
It is unusual to need to replace the fan clutch all by itself. Typically, people are tearing down to replace the radiator or water pump and notice that the fan clutch is loose or leaking oil or both, so they replace that as well.

The fan has a viscouse hub built in and the big nut in the center is left hand thread and will require undoing the opposite way so as you look at the engine undo clockwise. hope this helps

Alabreche@i have a 1999 sonoma v6 vortex have to change water pump how do i jam the pump from turning in order to un screw the fan?

Put a long prybar in the way of the fan blades at the base of the fin to keep it from turning.

Or, if that doesn't work, use a pneumatic impact ratchet or 3/8" impact wrench to unscrew the fan more easily while holding the fan blade with your hand and a rag.

I bought a 98 Dakota, it started over heating, I changed the thermostat, and when I went to flush my radiator, it was plugged. Can they put something in the radiator to temporarily make the car run good?...

Drain the coolant when it is cold and pull off the upper and lower radiator hose. Put a garden hose in the radiator neck (after removing the radiator cap) and turn the water up gradually and let it run for 15 to 20 minutes or until the flow is constant. If your water pump is not noisy or leaking and the pulley is not wobbling then you should not have to replace the water pump. You may want to flush out the block with water also. Do you know how to get the fan and fan clutch off the old water pump? we took out all 4 bolts on the clutch and still nothing my dad says there is a nut that twists off but have been unsuccessful

You have to hold the belt pulley to prevent it from turning, then unscrew the fan clutch by using a wrench or big channel locks on the part of the clutch nearest the pulley. On your Ram it should be a standard( not left handed) thread. You might have to put the old water pump in a vise to hold it while unscrewing the clutch. When you put the clutch back on you just need to snug it up on the water pump, the pump is a reverse rotation so the clutch will not unscrew itself.
