Question about 2001 Ford Focus

2 Answers

My 2001 Ford Focus ran out of gas last while heating up in my driveway. I put around 2 gallons of gas in the tank this morning and it turns over but the car will not crank. I changed the fuel filter and also checked to make sure the fuel pump is cutting on. After changing the filter the car still won't crank and I check the cutoff . I believe there isn't any gas getting to the engine block or coming thru the lines. I was thinking the sediment in the bottom of the tank is blocking the gas flow somehow. Any ideas?

Now what it will not start? Sprey starting fluid (small amount in the air cleaner while another person starts the car this will prime the pump)

I have a 2001 ford taurus and it ran out of gas. It wont start after i put gas in it

  • Assuming you put enough gas in the tank to turn the car over (2 gallons is a good start) and assuming the gas cap is on good and tight then it sounds like in drying up the tank you put all the containments sitting at the bottom of your gas tank into the fuel pump sock and it is now clogged. Changing the fuel pump is that fix.
  • You may want to check the fuel filter too first before the whole dropping the gas tank to get to the fuel pump scene. Its possible the fuel filter has got really clogged and will not let fuel pass. They can go just like that if it has been several thousand miles since last changing it. The fuel filter for this vehicle is on the passenger side rail, about midway, on the undercarriage of the car. The fuel line coming from the fuel pump leads right to it.
  • Of course check the battery connections too.

If it ran out of gas, there are two possible easy fixes. One is that the fuel filter is plugged up by junk from the bottom of the tank. The other is that water floats on top of gas and now your lines are a mix of fuel and water. I would change the filter and put water remover in the tank. Make sure there is a least 10 gallons of fresh fuel in the truck. If neither of these work, the pump may have been damaged as it uses the fuel to keep it cool.

My petrol light is staying on once I have put petrol in? I have a 2005 Ford Focus 2.0. What could be the problem?

If your sure the tank is above the last 2 gallons the sensor is most likely bad. You should have the sensor replaced. It is part of the same system that detects fuel level.

2004 nissan titan...ran out of gas

Good chance that even on 4 gallons it may not start I would try for more, prime the fuel pump several times by turning the key on and leaving it on for around 5 seconds then shutting it off and repeating, obviously not trying to start. I've had cases where even small FWD cars won't start even on 4 gallons on a 12 gallon tank. The newer fuel pumps are a closed system that only allow a small portion of fuel into the pump housing to keep contamination down. Let me know if after adding a few more gallons it won't start we will trouble shoot from there. Thank you for using fixya.com
