SOURCE: harmonic balancer

not too familiar with the hyundai brand vehicle but i can tell you what a harmonic balancer is and where it should be located. it is the large pulley located on the bottom of the engine it should have marks on it to indicate top dead center. it will have a rubber piece around the middle this is usually what goes with a balancer check this pulley for the rubber pushing out or missing check for metal filings on it.
also check to see if you have any idler pulleys these ar pulleys that bolt to the block the spin on a bearing that can go bad and will cause the problem that you are describing.
your alternator water pump and power steering pump can cause screeching sounds as well.

there is a mechanics tool that is a stethoscope it has a long rod that can be placed on the shafts of pulleys to hear where the noise is coming from. a good substitute for this is a long screwdrive (make sure it's long enough to be safe while the engine is running.) you can listen on the handle while the end is against the block or component that each pulley is on you will be able to hear the difference.
hope this helps some.

SOURCE: harmonic balancer bad car runs real bad

The harmonic balancer controls the triggering of the combined crankshaft/camshaft sensor. This controls ignition plus fuel injection. Replace the balancer and adjust the sensor or replace it if damaged.

pull #1 plug (you'll need someone to help you with this) have someone bump the starter till you feel the piston come up then you can use a wrench at the harmonic balancer to put piston at btdc (Before Top Dead Center)and see if the timing marks are aligned if not then you know the engine is out of time

What kid of car? What motor? What year? ...the default I have always used is no.1 piston at TOP DEAD CENTER Harmonic balancer should read 0 or Tdc. Point your distributor at the no.1 plug terminal and she should fire right up for some newer more complicated cars its different if this doesn't work let me know what your dealing with...good luck

The harmonic balancer is broken on my hyundai santa fe. How can it be removed and replaced

Parts stores sell a "harmonic balance pulley remover" for around 15-20 dollars. Much like a steering wheel puller, it's a gear puller made to remove the harmonic balancer with engine in car.

The pully assembly for the serpentine on my 2004 santa fe has a loose pully, ie: it came apart when I pulled off the grime shield in the wheel hub, IDK which of the pullies this loose part connects to, and...

It sounds like the harmonic balancer came apart. This is a two part pulley seperated by a rubber gasket. The part itself is much less expensive at auto parts stores than the dealership but you may need to wait a few days for it to arrive as most stores won't have the part in stock. It sounds like a lifter i was told it was the harmonic balancer by several people i replaced it car stick making ticking noise and picks up speed slow

I am curious why they said harmonic balancer and you replaced it, there is a crank sensor near the harmonic balancer was it rattling or loose they have a tendency to get loose, the harmonic is the big main pulley when that breaks because it is vulcanized then yes it tick and your car looses power. You check sparkplugs for being loose and not being tighten up,check the air filter too,I am sticking with the Harmonic balancer this time remove the drive belt but dont do it too long or it will overheat just for 2 minutes maximum see if the noise goes away. 2 minutes only battery wont charge also
