SOURCE: my battery light, abs and esp warning lights have

simliar problem with my '05 ST, replaced the battery but no change. Took it back to dealer and they replaced the altnerator under warranty. Fixed the problem, but now I notice a slight dimming of the headlights infrequently, but the stereo now initializes all on its own, and the low battery messages displayed on the stereo, but only one time.

SOURCE: electro mechanicl power steering assist

Before I go any further, I would recommend you drop by your local dealer and have them scan the Steering Module to see why the light is on. This should only take 5-10 minutes, and you should know exactly what's going on after the scan. Here is some background on the Electro Mechanical Power Steering Assists Warning Lamp, as well as a few suggested solutions:

  • The warning lamp can be found in the display unit of the dash panel insert. It serves as a means of displaying malfunctions or disturbances in the electro-mechanical power steering system. When the ignition is switched on, the warning lamp will light up red as part of the self-test procedure carried out by the electro-mechanical power steering system.
  • The warning lamp lights up in two colours if functional faults are detected. If it lights up yellow, the warning is of a lower priority. If the warning lamp lights up red, advice should be sought immediately from a workshop. If the warning lamp lights up red, it will be accompanied at the same time by an acoustic warning signal (three repetitions).
  • Once the power steering control unit receives a signal, indicating that all systems are working correctly, the warning lamp will go out. This self-test lasts for approx. two seconds. When the engine is started, the warning lamp will go out immediately.

Possible causes of the Power Steering Assist Warning Lamp:

  • Battery Voltage Low: The steering system can detect and react to low voltage situations. If battery voltage drops below 9 volts, power steering assistance will be reduced until shutdown and the warning lamp will light up red. In the case of brief voltage drops below 9 volts, the warning lamp will light up yellow.
  • Steering Angle Sender Failure: In the event of signal failure, an emergency running program is started. The missing signal is replaced by a substitute figure. Power steering assistance remains intact. Warning lamp K161 will light up to indicate the fault.
  • Steering Moment Sender: In the event of failure of the steering moment sender, the steering gear must be renewed. If a fault is detected, the power steering assistance is shut down. This shut down is a soft and gradual process, rather than sudden. To achieve a soft and gradual shutdown, a substitute steering force signal is calculated in the control unit from the steering and rotor angle of the electric motor. Faults are indicated by warning lamp K161.
  • Rotor Speed Sender: In the event of failure of the sensor, the steering angle speed is used as a substitute figure. Power steering assistance is shutdown safely. This avoids sudden loss of power steering assistance, caused by failure of the sensor. Faults are indicated by warning lamp K161 lighting up red.
  • Road Speed: The signal for the road speed is supplied by the ABS control unit. In the event of failure of the road speed signal, an emergency running program is started. The driver has full power steering assistance but there is no servotronic function. The fault is shown by warning lamp K161 lighting up yellow.
  • Engine Speed Sender: In the event of failure of the engine speed sender, the steering is actuated via terminal 15. The fault is not shown by warning lamp K161.
  • Electro-Mechanical Power Steering Motor: An advantage of the asynchronous motor is that the motor can be moved by the steering gear even in a state of no voltage. This means that, in the event of failure of the motor and thereby loss of power steering assistance, the steering can still be operated by applying a slightly greater amount of force. Even in the event of a short circuit, the motor will not become blocked. Faults are indicated by warning lamp K161 lighting up red.
  • Power Steering Control Unit: Integrated in the control unit is a temperature sensor, which is used to measure the temperature of the steering system. If the temperature rises above 100° C, power steering assistance is reduced gradually. If the power steering is below a figure of 60%, the electro-mechanical power steering warning lamp K161 will light up yellow and an entry is made in the fault memory.
ESP deals with wheel slippage, so it takes measures from the wheel speed sensor. When wheel slip is sensed, it closes the throttle automatically. With ESP light and yellow steering light, the problem is most likely a steering angle sensor, but the ASR light also being on could mean you have a problem with your ABS brake system. In this case, the problem could be as simple as the Road Speed Sensor.

Yellow means there is an issue with the system and it will run at reduced voltage when it can but you will still have assist. Red means there is a serious issue were the system can not give you assist and you should not attempt to drive it like this.

I have a 2000 Mercedes E430 base sedan. Last week I replaced the brake light switch because it was out and it solved the problem to the point that I can now put my car into gear and drive it, however, as...

Brake light switch problem may cause the ESP / BAS lights to illuminate.

Common symptoms of a bad
Mercedes brake light switch.
  • Car stuck in Park.
  • ABS ESP ETS lights come on.
  • Can not move the shifter from Park to Drive.
  • Brakes Defective Warning on Instrument Cluster
  • Car won't shift gears. Stuck in 2nd gear, limp mode.
  • Brake lights don't work. (Brake light switch can still be defective even if the brake lights work. Checking the brake light operation is not a good test.)
  • ESP, BAS, ABS lights turn on. Car won't shift properly. Stuck in gear.

TEST: To test your new brake light switch: Turn you car off to reset the ABS light. apply the parking brake. and start the car in neutral or park without using the brake. if the problem is the brake light switch... the light will only come on when you press the brake pedal.

If you replaced the brake light switch and the light is still on you should check a few other things such as:

  • Fuses and Relays
  • ABS pump
  • ABS wheel speed sensor
  • Brake Fluid Level
  • Get an advanced scanner to read trouble codes.

NOTE: ** You may need a MBZ scan tool to reset the error code which was stored in the ECU because of the bad brake light switch.

If the vehicle speed is greater thanapproximately 30 km/h (19 mph), the ESP systems (other than ABS) will turn
on automatically and the light will go out.
When the transfer switch (if equipped) is
turned to the "4L LOCK" position, the

ESP systems (other than ABS) will be canceled automatically. The light will come on and stay on.
• If the ESP systems operate continu-ously such as when driving on slippery roads, the traction control functions of the ESP systems may be canceled temporarily to avoid overheating the brake pads, and the light will come on. After a short period of time, the ESP.

(this latter cut out happens, with wild driving)

Esp light flashing

There could be one or more of several reasons why the ESP light has illuminated on your Smart car...
For example, you could have a fault with dirty reluctor rings on the Abs system - faulty Abs sensor/ s ... a fault with the brake light switch - a fault with the steering angle sensor -- even a software glitch / issue in the control system...
The above are known issues that can and do cause the Esp light to come on.
What you will have to do is have the car connected to a dealer diagnostic machine - This will run a full diagnostic test and fault code read - to see why the Esp light has come on and quickly and efficiently find the right cause - and then it can be sorted out, whatever it transpires to be.
You really cannot do much on a Diy basis on these for this fault. You can check the reluctor rings as mentioned above and the wiring to the ABS sensors. The abs light will often come on to with the Esp light - but not always. Dont check these these things with the Ign On....
Too, you can check to see if the brake lights are working - if they are not - thats a definite indication of brake lamp switch failure which will cause the Esp light to come on - but while its worth checking - even if the lights do work - it doesn't always follow the switch is ok - it has a dual function - brake lights and engine management circuitry...
At which point, if you have found nothing - you will have to have the diagnostic done as above to find the fault.

What does it mean when a yellow triangle with a surrounding arrow comes up on dashboard says "engin workshop"

ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system.
When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control.

For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.

tdisline_338.jpg

ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning.
The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.

The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP system is faulty. You must access the ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP ECU, in other words reset the ESP system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.
