on the back of the engine close to the firewall by the glow plug controller is a high pressure oil switch. if this switch goes out diesel fuel will not reach the injector pump.try pulling the molex and jumping it out with a wire. if it starts. replace the switch. it takes an extra deep socket designed for that switch that can be purchased at any auto supply. good luck!

first place to look would be your lift pump (fuel pump located behind the fuel filter housing). listen to it when you turn the ignition on, it should run for a few seconds and if you bump the starter it should run for about 30 secs. if you dont hear it running that is most likely your problem

The float sending unit is messed up and don't know now much gas is in the tank. The float may be stuck in a higher position showing more gas, in reality the gas level is way below. Try using a rubber mallet and tap on the gas tank near the fuel pump. It may help free up the float.

In almost every case I have seen this is caused by a defective fuel level sending unit inside the gas tank. You will need to remove the fuel tank from the car to replace it. The car must be raised as high as possible to access the tank straps and fuel lines, you will need a special tool to release the fuel hoses from the tank nipples. Be careful there is a high potential of fire here and have had one catch on fires twice in my life. Always support the car on safety Jack stands, also discinnect the battery negative cable before starting work. The part is about $150.00 and 3 hours to install with help from a friend.
