Rear pinion gear keeps going bad? How do I resolve?

Replaced rear pinion gear once, 1200.00 now need another repair? Why?

This is a hard job to do,l always fit the crown wheel as well.99.9% of the time if the pinion is shot so to is the crown wheel.When refitting these units it is very important that the back lash and pre-load on the diff.are set to workshop manual tolerances or the diff.will fail again..Good-luck...

Pinion gear needs to be adjusted OR bad bearings. Was this a USED unit? Check YouTube for a video titled "How to set up a pinion gear in a differential".

Rear end problems


If you are definitely sure it is coming from the rear end you have to remove the rear end cover. You will see the condition of the fluid check the fluid while that is being done. You will have a bird's eye view of the condition of the ring and pinion gears and the pinion bearings. The rumble from the rear end is usually a bad pinion bearing.

If you're not sure it is the rear, another often overlooked problem is the rear universal joint on the drive shaft. You have to remove the drive shaft to check the pinion bearing so you'll find the "U" joint is bad right then and there. If the joint is bad, don't cheese out, get both of them replaced.

That indicates a bad pinion bearing. Have a rear end whine at all speeds.Replaced differential bearings,pinion and all othergears show no signs of wear.Any ideas


This problem can be caused by a crush sleeve that needs replaced. Proper installation of this sleeve is critical for noise free operation. If the pinion nut is loosened at any time during the adjustment process then a new sleeve must be installed.

I have a 98 ford f150 4wd rear diff is howling bad under load and coast no noise at no load had bad rear axles and brgs even though i didnt think this would fix it i replaced them as i expected, no...


the bad bearings and axles probably caused damage or wear to the gears / pinion when under load the bearings keep the axles straight and keeps downward pressure from loads off the gears and gear bearings --look at gear mesh will probably be off very slightly and not from backlash shims but from ring gear bearings or pinion bearing damaged

My 1996 camaro z-28 need the rear end replaced, so were is the id tag, that gives me the correct rearend , in hte car and should I pull out the complete rear end and have it rebuiled, and then reinstalled...


If you take the VIN # to a GM dealer they should be able to tell you the original rear end that the vehicle came with. If you are going to take the rear end to a shop they will be able to tell when they take it apart. If it is a posi rear end it will have a tag under one af the cover bolts (if it has not been removed) Once inside a posi rear end is immediately identifiable from the clutch pack. Also the number of teeth is stamped on each (pinion and ring) gear. Divide ring gear # by Pinion gear # to get rear end ratio. Didn't get directly to your question, but I hope this helps. Sounds like the original wear pattern of the ring and pinion was disturbed when the pinion was tightened too much. Once a wear pattern is set in the gears you can't really change it. It might be the ring and pinion wearing that you are hearing and not a bearing at all. It's not the worst thing in the world but will cause the ring and pinion to wear improperly and is annoying. Differential work needs to be done by someone that really knows their stuff to avoid these little problems.

I'd say yes. The differential fluid is often overlooked by oil change technicians, even though it's something that should be topped off periodically.

It probably would cost more than that to repair it once it wears out.
Axle Housing Assembly Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Lift the vehicle.
  2. Drain the lubricant from the rear axle housing.
  3. Remove the rear axle assembly from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the brake caliper brackets from the rear hubs.
  5. Remove the rear cover and gasket from the rear axle housing.
  6. Remove the rear axle shafts from the vehicle.
  7. Remove the rear differential assembly from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the brake backing plates from the rear hubs.
  9. Remove the rear drive pinion shaft yoke and seal from the drive pinion.
  10. Remove the drive pinion from the rear axle housing.
To Install:
  1. Install the drive pinion into the rear axle housing.
  2. Install the rear drive pinion shaft yoke and seal onto the drive pinion.
  3. Install the rear differential assembly into the vehicle.
  4. Adjust the differential side bearing preload and the backlash.
  5. Perform a gear tooth contact pattern check.
  6. Install the brake backing plates onto the rear hubs.
  7. Install the rear axle shafts into the vehicle.
  8. Install the rear cover and gasket onto the rear axle housing.
  9. Install the brake caliper brackets onto the rear hubs.
  10. Install the rear axle assembly into the vehicle.
  11. Refill the lubricant in the rear axle housing.
  12. Lower the vehicle.

I think that changing the fluid would take about an hour, and depending on the garage, and the labor rate, that they might elect to take the rear cover off of the differential, and drain it that way and replace the fluid once it was put back on. He could inspect the gears while the cover was off and tell you how bad it was.'

Do you hear any clunking or gear mesh noises from the rear when putting it in gear or running the vehicle?


Some mechanics would simply top off the fluid and wait until it wears out, which could be several thousand miles in the future.

Use gear oil for it of the recommended viscosity in the service manual.

Generally thicker than motor oil.

So, adding fluid would cost only the amount of the fluid plus some labor.
A bottle of fluid might cost $9.99 or so depending on where you get it.

You might be able to do this yourself if you crawl under there, remove the fill plug at the top, and just add gear oil. If there isn't enough room you might drive it up on some ramps and then crawl under there.

this means the ring and pinion gear are worn, but when u do the gears u will need to also replace all the bearings as well.
