SOURCE: transmission codes:

I WOULD TRY REPLACING THE INPUT SPEED SENSOR..A DEFECTIVE SPEED SENSOR CAN CAUSE ALL OF THESE FAULTS..IT IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF TRANS ABOVE SOLENOID PACK..IT IS THE ONE CLOSEST TO THE ENGINE..IT SCREWS INTO TO TRANSMISSION..A 1 INCH SOCKET FITS IT..ALSO CHECK WIRING TO BOTH SPEED SENSORS..A SENSOR IS ABOUT 35 BUCKS,AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL DODGE DEALER..GET A NEW ONE AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE..FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM..HAVE REPLACED LOTS OF THEM

Welcome to Fixya

DTC P0700 means Internal Transmission Controller. This means a fault in the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or an interruption in power. Check the connector on the transmission and make sure it is clean and tight. Also check to see if the terminals inside the connector are damaged.

For the P0731 - does the speedometer works? If yes, then its the output speed sensor. Since you already replaced it. Check the connections if it is intact.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Hi

Trouble Code: P0700

Automatic Transmission Control System Malfunction
Possible Causes:
The presence of this code means the TCM detected a problemTCM related Sensor has solenoid is damaged or has failedThis code is for information only - check for other TCM codesTCM or PCM has failed .

P0715 - Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction.

Possible causes

- Transmission speed sensor circuit is open or shorted.

- Poor transmission speed sensor circuit connection

- Faulty transmission speed sensor

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0715 is detected when TCM or ECM does not receive the proper signal from the sensor.

P0715 CHRYSLER Description

The input speed sensor detects the primary pulley revolution speed and sends a signal to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and Engine Control Module (ECM).Replace both the input and output speed sensor as they love to go out together. The other codes could indeed be caused by the sensor. While you are under there, I strongly recommend you change your transmission fluid and filter. Use only ATF+4 fluid and use no additives. After you do that, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes and drive the car around to retrain the adaptive shifting program. Do a mix of light acceleration, moderate acceleration and wide open acceleration through the gears. After it learns that, drive normally and it will learn the rest in a week or so. During the learning process, some shifts may feel a bit weird.

P0730 - Incorrect Gear Ratio. Please check this link:-

http://engine-codes.com/p0730_chrysler.html

P0733 is for Gear Ratio Error In 3rd. For whatever reason your TCM (transmission control module) is seeing a slip or incorrect reading from the speed sensors when you are reaching third gear. The TCM expects to see a certain ratio between the input and output speed sensors if it sees that this is incorrect for a given gear it sets a code. This could be caused by many different things from wiring and sensors to an internal transmission problem.

I have a 1998 dodge caravan 3.3L fault codes p0500 p0700 p0720 p0715, how do I repair and replace sensors to pass smog test

Follow the links for each fault code.
http://www.obd-codes.com/p0500
P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction
P0720 Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0715 sets when there is an error in the transmission's input speed sensor signal. On the front of the trans there is an input and output speed sensor that the trans controller looks at for shifting control.

While the code could have set because of a wiring or connection problem, it's almost surely the sensor. Input speed sensor failures are not uncommon.

The input speed sensor is mounted right on the front of the trans directly under where the cooler lines attach. It threads directly in and has a 1" hex for a socket for removal. If the wiring and connection look visibly ok then I would recommend replacing the sensor

P0700 p0715

Replace the input speed sensor. Open the hood and look down, on the drivers side, at the transmission. At he front you will see two rubber lines at the transmission. The sensor is right below them. Remove those lines to remove the sensor.

My 05 Pacifica went into "limp in" mode which means it is stuck in 2nd gear. I took it to AutoZone and put it on the code machine. It pulled up P0700, P0715, P0731 and P0733. I changed out hte Speed Sensor...

Well code 700 is a generic code that means there is a problem with the transmission or the control module. Code 731 is for a problem with first gear which would explain why it stays in second gear.
Someone will need to check the circuits involved with first gear and the trans control module. A shop manual will be necessary to get the testing procedures.
