It is a type of security system. Like you said all functions are turned off until you push button because battery is disconnected from system.

I drove my vihicle home and 20 min latter it wouldnt start

This could be due to varies problems.

Some of the most common issues to cause this are:

1 - Not getting fuel ( Faulty fuel line, pump, etc)
2 - Not getting a spark ( dead battery, faulty alternator, faulty wires)
3 - Issue with the car's computer.

Please describe what you are hearing and seeing when attempting to start the vehicle. ( i.e. the car will keep turning over, but not catch, or you hear a clicking noise, or nothing happens at all).

Bmw 5 series wont start

This can be due to a weak battery. The Antitheft can sometimes create starting problems by interferring with the starter. The Antitheft senses the Voltage drop as a theft attempt and reduces the starter Voltage in an attempt to keep you from starting the vehicle.

You can get a free test at Autozone, Oreilys, and Advance. Some will instal a battery free.

Clicking noise coming from the engine and a dead battery

That clicking noise is your starter, your battery is dead or severly drained and when you try to start you car, your starter selnoid is trying to turn over, but doesn't have enough juice to get it going, so it's making that clicking noise. If you have a old, dead battery, it is time to replace it, if it's new and only been drained for exmaple leaving headlight on etc... then you can try to jump your camry with a jumper cable through another vehicle. Let it the car run for about 30 min or so to have it charge. You can also take it to autozone, advance auto part and have them charge for free or test it.

I have S40 volvo.the car won't start. There's no clicking noise. The alarm system stopped working also.the car is 5 years old w/90000 miles on it

Try jumping the vehicle but by pass the battery. Disconnect the Positive Terminal and when you connect the jumper cables connect the Negative cable to the Engine and the Positive to your Positive cable instead of the battery. If the vehicle turns over you know the battery is your problem. If it doesn't at least crank your either your motor is frozen, the starter is bad or you have a short on the positive cable.

My 2006 VW Beetle will not start after numerous attempts of turning the key over...there are no indicator lights coming on when I turn the key over...is my battery possibly dead?

Possibly. If it is making a faint click-click-click noise or not making any noise whatsoever, chances are its your battery.

Have the battery boosted, as per boosting instruction in your owners manual.

You may want to replace the battery anyways, as every time a battery is completely drained, cells in the battery die, and it will not hold a full charge.

I removed the battery from the car since I could never get it started; found out that the battery was DEAD. Battery was replaced. I'm rolling again. Thanks FixYa. Dead battery probability was suggested by another post.

Most of the time, car starts easily and runs well. Some of time, car starts - then stalls. Some times, car does not start and second attempt the clicking noise as if the battery were almost dead. New...

This sounds like you may be fighting more than one problem at a time.
First, I would replace the main relay (often located near the fuse panel under the dash).
Next, I would check all battery connections and even though the battery is relatively new, you probably should have it load tested.
