Replacing the carrier bearings is a lengthy repair. If your car has some age on it chances are they are worn and can create knocking problems or excess vibration.

Tools needed: various hand tools, screwdrivers, impact wrench (not necessary but it makes the job many times easier), jacks, jack stands (A MUST! when you are working under the car), gear puller (three jaw is best)

Parts needed: carrier bearings: MB505495 x 2 carrier bearing Insulator: MB505283 x 4 (if yours are worn) carrier bearing Insulator: MB505284 x 4 (if yours are worn) lobro joint boot kit: MB837572 (if you need to replace your boot) transfer case gear oil
Pre-removal: Jack up the car and place on jack stands. Remove the fill plug from the transfer case, then the drain plug and drain the fluid.
Mark where the driveshaft meets up to the rear differential so the orientation is maintained upon installation and remove the four bolts. Leave one in to hold it as you remove the rest of the shaft.
Support the driveshaft with a few jacks or some blocks, you don't want it to drop or bend at the lobro joint too much. Unbolt the two nuts at the rear carrier bearing. They are lock nuts so they will be tight the whole length of the stud. There may be some spacers so be sure to keep track of which stud they are on. Unbolt the exhaust hanger then the remaining two nuts holding the front carrier bearing on.Once you have everything unbolted you can drop the shaft and pull it out of the transfercase. Leave an oil pan underneath the transfercase as some gear oil will come out. Again be sure to keep the shaft straight, a second hand will help here. Also be sure not to scratch the end that goes into the transfercase and is a good idea to wrap and tape it. The lobro joint is that between the two bearings.Make a mating mark between the front shaft and the rear two so they may be lined up upon assembly. Unbolt the four bolts.Make a mark on the center shaft and the companion flange.Unbolt the nut inside the companion joint. It is on there with 137ft lbs, impact wrench works nicely here, otherwise you will have to put the shaft in a vise. Be sure to remove the washer underneath

Car wouldnt go into gear took it to dealer they said the drove it and it was carrier bearing. Can that be right?

There could be an issue with the carrier bearing. But I have always know the carrier bearing as the bearing that a two piece drive shaft ride on. That would not keep a vehicle from going into gear. Might make a whine, or a thump if the rubber/urethane that it ride in broke.
And if it does not go into gear, how did the dealer drive it?
Question that dealer and maybe get an opinion from a different person. Dealer mechanics are not all factory trained. Only a few (depending on the number of mechanics that are employed) have to be factory trained.

Whirring noise - Saturn VUE

Greg,
Sounds like wheel bearing issues. I've had my front wheel bearings replaced twice on an 02 Vue AWD V-6. The 02-07 Vues use the same wheel bearings and they are a known issue with these
cars. Another problem with these cars is the rear support bearing for the drive shaft in the AWD models. I recommend having the wheel bearings and rear carrier bearing checked out. Good luck.

I just had my wheel bearings replaced on both right and left sides in the front of my 2002 saturn vue. My vue sounds very loud when I am driving. What is it?

Vues are bad for having all hub bearings make noise, check your rear ones.Or the ones you didn't have replaced. If it's all wheel drive check the propshaft center carrier bearing.Common to fail & make noise.hope this helps

Finally it got so bad I could not deal with it any longer, I have a great mechanic and he automatically point out the carrier bareing I had it replaced and my car is very very peaceful...... :) Hope this helps.
