since the coils are pricey , i would consider having it done by a shop with a warranty , but with an estimate first .. how did you determine the coils and not the spark plugs ?

The last number in a po30 code is the cylender with the missfire. you say you have po306 and po302 which means #6 and#2 are missfiring. if you stand in front of car the passenger side has 1 through 4 cylenders starting with # 1 in front and # 4 in rear and driver side has 5 through 8 starting with # 5 in front and # 8 in rear. passenger side 1 2 3 4 - driver side 5 6 7 8. if you have indavidual coils on each plug then just unplug the coil and take the single 7mm screw out that holds it in place and the coil will come straight up off the plug

Mercury grand marquis 2001 change spark plugs and coil but misfire code po305 still check light still on plus hestiating when accerlating on gas pedal

If you changed an individual ignition coil based on
a PO305 & that didn't resolve the issue, then either
the code didn't help & you have a different coil bad or
several

Put back the old coil on #5 & check codes again & walk
a new coil until you get the bad one or more

If you have a shop put a scan tool on it-- use Mode #06
to check misfire counts

Sometimes that doesn't get a really hit & miss coil & your
back to walking all those coils not replaced in the last couple
years

I got code PO 305 on a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis, what is the spark plug wire part called
This will have a direct coil over ignition with a coil over each spark plug. The coil is the electrical part over the spark plug. The coil also has a rubber part that is called the boot or spark plug boot. The boots can be purchased separately but the coils will come with new boots.

is it #5 coil,

Have you checked to see if there is any spark coming out of the number 5 coil?

and should I replace the coil and spark plug and what should the spark plug be gapped at?

When was the last time the spark plugs where changed? It may be due for all the spark plugs to be changed. The spark plug gap is usually listed on the emissions sticker under the hood. It should be .050 - .056 or very close to that.

  3. On the 3.8L engine, disengage the engine control wiring connector from the radio ignition interference capacitor.

  1. Remove the ignition coil cover from the ignition coil by releasing the locking tabs on both sides of the cover, then remove the ignition coil.
To install:
  1. Install the ignition coil, then attach ignition coil cover, making sure the cover is firmly in place.
  2. If removed, connect the ignition coil and radio interference capacitor, then install the ignition coil retaining screws. Tighten the retaining screws to 25-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  3. Connect the coil wire, then engage any electrical connectors that were removed.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope help with this (remember rated this post). TY for using Fixya.
